  1. The future in english

Exercise 1. Say that somebody is doing something in the future. Use the verbs in brackets.

Model: We often visit them. (today)

We are visiting them today.

1. Felix plays golf every weekend. (today) 2. Mrs. Hibbert cleans the house regularly. 3. During the afternoon our boss has meetings with clients. (this afternoon) 4. Tony and his wife eat out every Saturday. (next Saturday) 5. On Tuesday Steve always has lunch with Dr. Walker. (next Tuesday) 6. We go for a picnic every Sunday. (this Sunday)

Exercise 2. Complete the sentences using to be going to and the verb in brackets.

1. I’ve made up my mind. I (change) my job. - What you (do)? - I’m not sure yet. 2. Why have you bought all that wallpaper? What you (do)? - I (decorate) the living room. 3. He’s decided that he (not to leave) school this summer. He (stay) on for another year. 4. I (buy) a new motorbike. - How you (pay) for it? You haven’t got enough money. - I (ask) a bank to lend me some money. 5. Lynne has just sold her car. - She (buy) a new one? 7.Why have you moved all the furniture out of this room? - I (clean) the carpet. 8. You (be) very surprised when you see the house. 9. I hear Ruth has won some money. What she (do) with it? - She (buy) a new car. 10. This food looks horrible. I (not to eat) it.

Exercise 3. Say what a person is going to do next in the following situations.

Model: There’s a nice cake in front of Tom.(eat)

He is going to eat it.

1. William and Joe are on the way to the railway station. (meet) 2. There’s no butter at home. (buy) 3. My job is not well-paid.(change) 4. Our apartment is small. (move) 5. I have friends in Boston. Exercise 4. Complete these sentences using “ going to “ or “ not going to”.

Model: I watched Panorama last week, but...(not/next week)

I watched panorama last week, but I’m not going to watch it next week.

1. Julia caught the 7.45 train yesterday, but...(not/tomorrow). 2. I did not see the film last month, but...(next month). 3. She bought some meat in that shop last Monday, but...(next time). 4. I didn’t travel by air the last time, but...(next time). 5. We stayed at home last night, but...(not/tonight). 6. I spent 20 pounds on Christmas presents last year, but...(not/so much this year). 7. I visited Bill in hospital this morning, but...(not/again today). 8. I didn’t pay the bill when it came, but...(very soon). 9. We didn’t plan out holidays last summer but...(this summer). 10. I didn’t read the newspaper yesterday, but...(this morning). 11. We invited the Walkers to our last party, but...(not/next party). 12. I gave my son some pocket money last week, but...(not/next week).

Exercise 5. Translate into English using “ to be going to”.

Когда ты собираешься навестить брата? - Завтра утром. 4. Мои друзья приезжают в воскресенье. Я собираюсь встретить их на вокзале. 5. Я знаю только английский язык, но я собираюсь изучить немецкий. 6. Не могу поверить. Посмотри на Джейн! Мне кажется, она собирается пригласить того парня на танец. 7. Где вы собираетесь провести отпуск? 8. Она не собирается здесь оставаться больше ни одной минуты. 9. Я собираюсь изучать французский язык в будущем году. 10. Мы собираемся послать им завтра телеграмму. 11. Я боюсь, что он на меня рассердится. 12. Он собирается провести летние каникулы в Крыму. Морской воздух принесет ему пользу. 3. У нас скоро будет экзамен по английскому языку.

THE FUTURE INDEFINITE (SIMPLE) TENSE

Exercise 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Future Simple.

1. We (hope) for the best. 2. He (want) this information in a week. 3. You (have) time to help me tomorrow? 4. He (believe) whatever you may tell him. 5. I’m sure they (understand) your point of view. 6. He (finish) his experiment soon. 7. Do you think that he (recognize) you? 8. She (take) this book from the library tomorrow. 9. Miss Green (not to sing) at the next concert. 10. Perhaps he (arrive) in time for lunch. 11. They (stay) with us next Christ- mas. 12. Do you know the way? No? Then I (show) you. 13. I never (forgive) him. 14. I’m sure that you (like) him.

Exercise 2. Peter wants to see Sally. He is talking to her on the telephone. Complete the conversation using “ will/won’t.”

Peter: You (be) at home this evening, Sally?

Sally: Well, I’m working late. I don’t expect I (finish) until after 9.00, so I (not to be) home until quite late.

Peter: Oh, I see. What about tomorrow? You (be) free for lunch?

Sally: No, I’m afraid I (be) in a meeting at lunch time.

Peter: What time do you think (end) the meeting?

Sally: I’m not sure, but it probably (not to finish) before 2.00. Listen, Peter. Why don’t we meet for a coffee after work tomorrow evening?

Peter: What time you (be) finish tomorrow?

Sally: I (be) free by 6.00 p.m.

Peter: All right. I (meet) you at your office at 6.00, then.

Sally: Right. I (see) you then.

Exercise 3. Make the following sentences a) negative and b) interrogative.

Model: Dr. Brown will begin his lectures next month.

a) Dr. Brown won’t begin his lectures next week.

b) Will Dr. Brown begin his lectures next week?

1. The summer holidays will begin at the end of June. 2. She’ll be married in spring. 3. It’ll take me an hour to get there. 4. My brother will go to India for six months. 5. She will call on them tomorrow. 6. He will see her at 9 o’clock tomorrow. 7. There will be a lot of people at the lecture today. 8. They will not translate the article without our help. 9. We shall meet in the univer- sity. 10. He will remember us. 11. I’ll be in tomorrow morning. 12. They will leave Moscow in August. 13. The talk will be very interesting.

Exercise 4. Add tag question to the following statements.

Model: 1) I shall be back on Friday.
