Unit 8 Optimize Your Sewing Time
If you want to save time on sewing and see the result you should gather and buy all of the supplies necessary to complete your sewing or craft project in advance. It’ll not consume much of your time and you won’t have to stop in the middle of the project in order to run out and get a forgotten item.
Check twice the threading of your sewing machine to prevent immediate stitching problems. Breaking thread or skipped stitches can cause you to lose interest in the project, not to mention the time lost in fixing the problem. And speaking of thread, always use a good quality thread.
It is a mistake to use the same needle for everything you sew until it breaks. Some fabrics require a fine needle while heavier duck type or denim fabrics require a heavier needle. You should keep a supply of assorted machine needles at hand so you'll have the correct needle for the fabric you'll be using. A bent needle even if only "slightly" bent can cause skipped stitches and can quite possibly cause damage to your fabric.
All pattern pieces have grainline markings. The grainline should run parallel with the length of the fabric. If you simply lay the pattern pieces anywhere on the fabric, ignoring the grainlines, the finished garment will not hang right. The extra few minutes spent laying the pattern pieces correctly and cutting the seam lines precisely will result in a professional looking garment you will be proud of. Pressing the seams during the sewing process will produce a more professional looking garment.
Unit 9 Customs, Climate, Religion and Apparel
Apparel is used to describe the clothes worn by people. There are many different types of apparel, worn to suit different occasions and places. Many factors can affect the type of clothes one wears.
The four factors are the climate of the country, its customs and traditions, the people's religion and the different status of a certain group of people in a country.
In many parts of the world, people need protection from the weather. So the type of climate influences the type of clothes that people wear.
People wear clothes for three basic purposes - protection, communication and decoration. But people of different regions of the world often need different kinds of protection, especially in different climates.
People may also wear clothes that have a special meaning not understood by people of other countries.
The materials used for clothing vary around the world. Some textiles are better suited to a particular climate. For example, knitted wool is more useful in cold climates, and thin woven cotton is more useful in warm climates.
For most of history, the textiles people used depended on the raw materials available locally, such as flax in Egypt, cotton in India, and silk in China.
Beyond considerations of utility and availability, however, people tend to derive regional or national identity from their most characteristic textiles, just as they do from their typical foods. Thus, a European businessman defines himself in part by his woolen suit, an Indonesian farmer by his cotton sarong.
