Children in your classroom aren’t just boys and girls. Every one is a unique individual who has never been before and will never again exist. If you like people, you will love teaching. To be a good teacher you must be really interested in what you are doing. Remember that an ignorant teacher teaches boredom. But a good teacher catalyzes in his pupils the desire to know and love the truth and beauty.

John Steinbeek, writing about his school days said: “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and you know how few great artists there are in the world. Teaching night even be the greatest of the arts, since its medium is the human mind and the human spirit”.

Ex. 18. Read the story and say what you think of this teacher. While translating use a dictionary if necessary. Flowers are red by Harry Chapin

A little boy went first day to school, he got his crayons and he started to draw.

He put colours all over the paper, because colours are what he saw.

And the teacher said, “What are you doing, young man?” “I’m painting flowers”, he said.

She said, “It’s not the time for art, young man. Anyway flowers are green and red”.

There’s a time for everything, young man, and a way things should be done.

You’ve got to show concern for everyone, because you’re not the only one.

And she said, “Flowers are red, young man, green leaves are green. And there’s no need to see flowers any other way than the way they always have been seen”.

But the little boy said, “There are so many colours in the rainbow, so many colours in the morning sun,

So many colours in the flowers, and I see every one”.

So the teacher said, “You’re a naughty boy! There are ways that things should be,

And you’ll paint flowers the way they are, so repeat after me”.

And she said, “Flowers are red, young man, green leaves are green,

And there’s no need to see flowers any other way than the way they always have been seen”.

But the little boy said, “There are so many colours in the rainbow,

So many colours in the morning sun,

So many colours in the flowers, and I see every one”.

Then the teacher put him in the corner. She said, “It’s for your own good,

And you don’t come out till you get it right and you’re responding like you should”.

Finally he got lonely, frightened thoughts filled his head.

So he went to the teacher and this is what he said:

Flowers are red, green leaves are green,

There’s no need to see flowers any other way than the way they always have been seen”.

Time went by like it always does, and they moved to another town.

The little boy went to another school, and this is what he found.

He found the teacher there was smiling. She said, “Painting should be fun.

There so many colours in the flowers, so let’s paint every one”.

But the little boy painted flowers in neat rows of green and red,

And when the teachers asked him why, this is what he said:

“Flowers are red, green leaves are green,

There’s no need to see flowers any other way than the way they always have been seen”.
