a Write down your measurements in British and Continental sizes.

b Ask people in your class.

Example

Ex. 4. Make new shopping dialogues for these items. Use your own sizes.

Follow up

Ex. 5. Write one of your dialogues from Exercise 4.

Ex. 6. Read the dialogues and do the tasks below them.

Are you being served? a) Ladies’ shoes

Assistant: Are you being served, madam?

Woman: No, I’m not. May I try on these shoes? And those, perhaps … Ah, yes, and those.

  1. Make these sentences passive. (They all mean the same and are used in shops in the passive).

a Is anyone serving you?

b Is anybody attending to you?

c Is anybody looking after you?

2. Role play a situation in a shoe shop. Use the dialogue above, then ask about size, colour, style, and price.

b) The hi-fi department

Man: Have you got another one of these radios?

Assistant: No, sorry. I’m afraid that’s the last one.

Man: But it’s been damaged. Look, the aerial’s been bent.

Assistant: Well, I can let you have a 20% discount…

  1. Complain about these faults using the passive.

a Someone’s scratched the paint.

b Someone’s broken the controls.

c Someone’s dented the side.

  1. Role play a conversation about something else in the shop. Find a lot of faults and try to get a bigger discount.

c)Gentlemen’s fashions

Man: I want to return these trousers. They don’t fit.

Assistant: I’m sorry, sir. They’ve been worn. We can’t take them back.

Man: But they haven’t been made properly. One leg’s much longer than the other.

Assistant: Oh, yes. I see. Let me call the manager …

  1. Make these sentences passive.

a You’ve worn those shoes.

b They didn’t make these shoes correctly. One is bigger.

c You’ve used that umbrella.

  1. Role play a conversation about a jacket. You can use this information:

  • one sleeve / too long

  • three buttons / four buttonholes

  • sleeve / ripped

d) The demonstration

Demonstrator: … and this new electronic diary is only the size of a credit card. Two hundred names and addresses can be stored in the memory, and five appointments per day can also be stored. It costs only £19.99.

  1. Look at some other features of the electronic diary and make passive sentences.

a) You can keep it with your credit cards.

b) You can store 300 telephone numbers.

c) You can ring an alarm for each appointment.

d) You can store 200 postcodes.

2. Role play. You have just bought one. Show it to a friend.

Ex. 7. Read, translate and act out the dialogues.

1.

A: Are you being served?

B: No. What have you got in the way of brown suede jackets size 42?

A: Sorry, can’t help you at the moment.

B: Will you have any more in?

A: I’m not sure, but you may be lucky at our High Street branch.

2.

A: Could you help me, please?

B: What can I do for you?

A: Could I look at the headband in this case?

B: Just one moment, please, while I get the key.

3.

A: Do you want some assistance?

B: Yes. How much is that pen?

A: This one or that one?

B: The one next to the black one.

A: It’s 90 p.

B: May I look at your other pens?

A: Certainly. Fountain-pens or ball-point pens?

B: I’m looking for a good fountain-pen.

4.

Alessandra has come to a department store to change a skirt and to buy some shoes.

Assistant: Hello. Can I help you madam?

Alessandra: Yes, my daughter bought a skirt here yesterday and …

Assistant: the ladies’ fashion department is upstairs, madam.

Alessandra: Oh yes, of course. Actually, I’m also looking for some shoes. I’d like to try this style. In Italy I take size 38, but I’m not sure about my size here.

Assistant: Well, if you’re a 38 you might find a 41/2 or a 5 the right size for you. Let’s see. This pair is a 5. It ought to fit you, but if it doesn’t we’ll try another pair.

Assistant: Yes, madam. Can I help you?

Alessandra: Yes, please. Yesterday my daughter bought this skirt from this shop. I’d like to change it. Here, I’ve got the receipt.

Assistant: What’s the problem?

Alessandra: I’m afraid it doesn’t fit. It’s a size 12 and it’s too small.

Assistant: Mmm. Then perhaps you ought to try a size 14.

Ex. 8. Fill in the following expressions in this dialogue: Excuse me/please/ I’m afraid/ I’m sorry/ thank you very much.

You: … …could you help me, …?

Assistant: Yes?

You: I’d like a film for my camera, but I’m not sure what kind.

Assistant: Can I see your camera?

You: … … I’ve left it at home.

Assistant: Is it 13 mm?

You: … …, but I really know.

Assistant: Does the film look like this or like this?

You: Ah, it’s like that one.

Assistant: Then it is 35 mm. 24 or 36?

You: 36? … .

Assistant: That’s 3.75$ …

You: … … … … .

Ex. 9. Working in pairs make up dialogues using the following variations:

Hello,

may I help you?

Yes. I’d like to look at

your pinafore dress;

could I help you with anything?

those dimmer jackets;

do you want some assistance?

that pair of high heeled sandals;

evening gown.

Ex. 10. Find the logical order of the following parts of the dialogues.

A.

  1. - It’s on the second floor to the right of the escalator.

  2. – Try the Household goods department.

  3. – Excuse me, where can I buy some bulbs?

  4. – How do I get there?

B.

  1. – What colour do you have in mind?

  4. – Excuse me?

  5. – And how do you like this navy-blue one?

  6. – Are you being attended to?

  7. – I’m afraid, we don’t have anything like that in stock.

Ex. 11. Complete the dialogue, make up your own dialogues on analogy.

Ex. 12. Compose dialogues using the key words for the situations given

  1. Two friends in a gift shop choosing a birthday present for their close friend (a desk set (набор), practical, last forever, too expensive, can’t afford, another one, match, sitting room, black).

Ex. 13. Translate from Russian into English:

1.

Ex. 14. Dramatize the situation.

  3. At the Ladies’ Shoes, the customer wants to buy some summer shoes.

  4. 2 friends want to buy a cheap but original gift for their close friend.

  5. A man tries to buy some cosmetics for his girl-friend.
