BUSINESS LUNCH

The business lunch is a very popular type of meeting. It is a time to relax a little outside the office; and a time to get to know people personally in a less formal atmosphere, while doing something productive.

The business lunch in the USA is usually a short meeting. Some time is spent eating and making small talk before more serious matters are discussed. Making pleasant conversation with colleagues sets a positive tone for the rest of the meeting. Talk about weather, sports, the restaurant, or type of food you are eating, and avoid politics, religion, and anything negative. As a foreign guest, you might want to prepare ashort story or anecdote about your trip. When visiting a foreign country wait until your host brings up business rather than initiate it yourself. When you hear something like: "Well, let's get down to business," then you know the official meeting hasbegun. Business lunch discussions, because they are more relaxed, are usually less formal. Business people may jump into the discussion when they have something to say.

In many businesses, meetings represent 50 percent or more of a typical work day. The business lunch, however, will always remain a favourite way to entertain and get to know potential clients, or work with business partners in a more relaxed atmosphere.
