The official name of this country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is not a very big country. It is smaller than Ukraine but more populated.
The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles are a group of islands. They lie off the north – west coast of European continent. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and some 5,500 smaller islands.
The largest island is Great Britain. It has three parts: England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea and the North Sea.
The smaller island is Ireland. It is separated from Great Britain by the North Channel. Ireland is divided into two parts: the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This country occupies the territory of 244,000 (243,610 sq. km.) square kilometers.
The population of Great Britain is over 62 million people (July 2011). There are four main nationalities: the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish. The national language is English there.
There are no high mountains on the British Isles. The Highlands of Scotland are the tallest of the British mountains. The highest peak of the Highlands is Ben Nevis (1, 343 metres high).
Great Britain has many rivers and lakes. The main rivers are the Thames and the Severn. The Thames is the deepest and the Severn is the longest of the British rivers. There are many lakes in Scotland. The most beautiful of them is Loch Lomond.
The climate of Great Britain is mild. The summer is not very hot and the winter is not very cold. The weather is changeable there. It is often foggy and rainy.
Great Britain is not very rich in mineral resources. It has some deposits of coal, iron ore, oil and gas.
Great Britain is a highly-developed industrial country. The main branches of British economy are engineering, mining, motor vehicle manufacturing, textile, chemistry, electronics, fishing and food processing. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding.
There are many big industrial cities in Great Britain such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield, Leeds, London and many others.
The United Kingdom is a parliamentary (constitutional) monarchy.
