1. Read the supplementary text about the impressions of an American about the Ukrainian way of shopping. Do you agree with the statements in the article? Discuss it.

The big place to shop in Ukraine is the bazaar. Everyone goes to the bazaar at one time or another. The bazaar is the shopping mall of Ukraine where anything and everything can be purchased. For those not familiar with these institutions, they are similar to a flea market or farmers’ market in the U.S. Actually, service is rather good here. Prices usually are not set, and some degree of haggling is permitted (even if, like me, you don’t speak the language). If you look at the entire bazaar, there is a pretty wide selection of goods. If you look at an individual kiosk, selection is pretty narrow. Complete ranges of sizes are not always available, but if the one kiosk does not have your size and they see that you are serious about buying, they will run, not walk, to another kiosk where they think the other size or version might be found.

U.S. retailing tends to be much more self-service than Ukraine. Most goods are available for inspection by individual shoppers. Only very valuable goods are kept behind glass and demand assistance by a salesperson. Imagine the surprise of an American, who has just arrived in Ukraine, when he or she goes into a shop and sees all of the goods behind glass. The first reaction is the thought that there must be some very valuable goods in that shop. After all, only the most valuable goods require such protection. This manner of selling goods seems to be disappearing, and even in the short time I have in Ukraine I have noticed shops changing their method of display, and other stores appearing with goods on open shelves. In the time I have in Zaporizhia, not only have numerous ‘western’ style stores opened, but Euromart and Billa supermarkets have opened shops as well.

2.Learn the text to speak about shopping

When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many-kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men's and women's clothing stores, a grocery, a bakery and a butchery.

A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: ready-made clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there. There are also escalators in big stores which take customers to different floors.

In the women's clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men's clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, coats, ties, etc. In the perfumery they sell face cream аnd powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.

In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, pasta, flour, cereals, tea. At the butcher's there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits.

The method of shopping may vary. It may be a self-service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. In most small shops the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change. Shopping on the Internet (online) or buying from e-commerce sites is getting popular at present. Many people, especially young, find it convenient and economical because prices there are really much lower.

Big shops have sales several times a year, and if people go to sales to save money, shops have sales to make money. They earn a lot of money. In fact, reduced prices are the greatest temptation. When paying the money for the purchase, you are not yet sure, whether you really need this thing or not. So customers should be careful.
