2. Read the statements and discuss them.

Myth #1: Cutting down on portion size is the best way to lose weight.

Not on its own. If you attempt to lose weight by just eating less, you are likely to gain the weight back. Lasting results will come from changing the types of foods you eat, not just the amounts.

Myth #2: Just cut out fat and you'll lose weight.

This approach to weight loss, popular in the 80s, simply doesn't work for most people. Even if a food is labeled "fat-free," it can still be high in calories from sugar and hidden carbs. Effective weight loss comes from being mindful of your total calorie consumption as well as your fat intake.

Myth #3: Cutting calories causes your body to go into starvation mode and slows weight loss.

This is untrue. Your body's resting metabolic rate can vary by about 15%. Nevertheless, eating too few calories and an inadequate amount of protein can make you lose precious lean muscle mass, which will eventually slow metabolism, for the long term. Ideally, stick to the calorie and protein amounts that are right for your body with the Shape Works™ program.

Myth #4: High-protein diets cause ketosis, which reduces hunger.

Ketosis occurs when fat, instead of carbohydrate, is used as an energy source during a high-protein diet. Ketone bodies are produced, which give your breath a bad "fruity" odor. Ketone bodies do not reduce appetite; but, eating sufficient protein for your body needs can help reduce hunger and support weight loss.

Myth #5: Exercise alone can help you lose weight.

While exercise is an important component of a healthy weight-loss program, it is not a great way to lose weight on its own. Exercising for even an hour at a time burns only a moderate amount of calories. Combining exercise with calorie reduction and a healthy eating plan is the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off.

3. Read the dialogue and act it out: At a restaurant

Waiter: Good evening. Two for dinner?

Boris Brown: Yes, that's right

W: Where would you like to sit?

B.B.: Could we have a table near the window, please?

W: Come with me, please (leading Boris and his wife Vera to a table for two)

B.B.: Could we have the menu?

W: Certainly (waiter brings the menu and a wine list).

B.B.: We have to make up our mind. We'll order in a few minutes.

B.B.: Do you want an appetizer, Vera? Oysters, smoked herring, or avocado?

Vera: Does it come with the dinner?

B.B.: No, it's a la carte.

V.: Let's see....the dinner includes salad, an entree, vegetables and potatoes as side dishes, a dessert, and coffee. That's more than enough.

B.B.: Okay. We'll order a dinner without an appetizer. What about the entree? What would you like-veal, roast beef, steak, or chicken?

V: We've had chicken at home rather often. When we eat out, I'd like to get something we don't have at home. As for me, I'd like to have a steak.

B.B.: So would I.

W: Are you ready to order now?

B.B.: Yes. Can we begin with the salad?

W: Certainly, sir. What kind of dressing would you like?

B.B: Just olive oil and vinegar for both of us.

W: And for your entree?

B.B: Two steaks, please.

W: Rare, medium, or well done?

B.B: Medium, please.

V: Is there a choice of vegetables

W: No, ma'm. We serve a daily special. Today you can have mashed potatoes. The vegetable of this day is asparagus.

B.B: It's all right with me .What about you, Vera?

V: It's okay.

W: Would you like to see the wine list?

B.B: We'd like a carafe of Chablis.

W: Fine. Will you order your dessert now?

B.B: Can we order it later?

W: Of course.
