2. Explain the following words and word combinations in English.

To report commands, requests, suggestions, etc we use a reporting verb (advise, ask, suggest, beg, offer, tell, etc) followed by to-infinitive, not to-infinitive or an –ing form.

e.g.

Direct Speech Reported Speech

He said “Make some tea, please!” He asked me to make some

tea.

She said “Don’t open the door!” She told me not to open the

door.

He said “Let’s buy her a necklace!” He suggested buying her a necklace.

3. Turn the following sentences into Reported speech. Choose from the verbs of reporting – tell, advise, ask, warn.

1. “Go to the butcher’s and buy some meat!” mother said to me.

2. “Don’t buy that milk! It’s of low quality” my sister said to me.

3. “Read the list of ingredients before buying convenience food!” she said to her sister.

4. “Don’t spend all your money on unnecessary things!” mother said to her son.

5. “Let’s go shopping because we have run out of bread, milk and some other goods!” he said.

6. “Now, go to the checkout and pay for all that stuff!” Kate said to her husband.

7. “Don’t pay in cash!” she said to me.

8. “Don’t think that credit cards are dangerous!” they said to me!

4. Find all the pieces of advice given in text b and turn them into reported speech.

WORD FORMATION

5. Use the correct form of the words in the brackets.

Wise 1) … (CONSUME) read magazines and 2) … (ADVERTIZE) and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for 3) … (INFORMATION).
