Advice for consumers

Most mothers have a good piece of advice: Never go into a supermarket hungry! If you go shopping for food before lunch time, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how – and how not – to buy things at the grocery store. First, you should check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need those things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! Next, in the market, carefully read the information on the package, and don’t let words like “New and Improved!” or “All natural!” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients on the back. Third, compare prices; that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.

1. What advice would you give your friends before they go shopping?

2. Do you agree with the fact that you should not go shopping for food if you are hungry? Speak about your experience.

3. Is it popular to buy at sales in your country? Have you ever gone shopping abroad? If yes, try to compare doing shopping in this country and abroad.

4. What do you pay attention to if you go shopping for food?

5. There is a great variety of goods in the supermarkets these days. Do you compare prices of different brands if you buy some goods?

6. What was the funniest (the most unpleasant) situation that happened to you in the shop?

7. What do you know about e-commerce? Would you like to purchase on-line? Why? Why not?

8. Can shopping help (to) relax?
