II. Provide synonyms for: monotonous (life).

III. Translate the passage: "She spent a wretched day... ... to give her a peep at her feet of clay".

IV. Answer the following questions:

1. Do you think Julia really was harassed and unhappy?

2. Was there anybody Julia could confide in?

3. Why do you think Julia felt a sudden abhorrence for the circle she had moved in during the last year?

4. Where did Julia find refuge and why?

5. Did Julia realize that she acted poorly?

6. Why was Julia's performance was a mess?

7. Do you think Michael really meant it when he said: "Darling, Duse couldn't hold a candle to you?" How do you understand his words?

8. Is your opinion of life at St. Malo the same as Julia's: "Poor old girls, they couldn't live much longer and they led drab, monotonous lives"?

9. Why do you think Julia's mother didn't want her friends to know that her daughter was an actress?

V. Comment on:

"That was quite another pair of shoes. Her acting was more important than any love affair in

the world".

"The pain in her heart was unendurable".

"Her acting ceased to be a means by which she gave release to her feelings and was again the

manifestation of her creative instinct".

"They had achieved the aloofness from the common ties of men that Julia felt in herself when

she stood at the footlights bowing to the applause of an enthusiastic audience. Sometimes she

had thought that aloofness her most precious possession. In her it was born of pride; in them

of humility".

VI. Translate the following.
