II. Make a list of the chief events in the chapter.

III. Translate the passage: "She was careful to make it plain to him..." until the end of the paragraph.

IV. Paraphrase: "It was exasperating that with so much to make him worthy of her affection, she should be so excruciatingly bored by him".

V. Recall the situations for:

"He was a bit of a snob";

"He seemed suddenly to have grown very sophisticated";

"Julia used all her arts of cajolery";

"She read his mind like an open book";

"I'll cook his goose all right".

VI. Translate into English:

VII. Speak on the following points:

1. Julia's plans for Tom's holiday, her attitude towards Tom.

2. Tom's "tragedy" and Julia's role in it.

3. Julia's feelings to her son Roger:

a) when he was a boy;

b) before the Cambridge period;

c) in connection to Tom.

4. Holiday at Taplow: sports, parties.

III. Make a list of expressions with the word "heart".

IV. Translate into English:

V. Comment on Julia's words: "Let me see you once more and then, if you're still angry with me, we'll call it a day".

VI. Speak on:

1. Julia's judgment of men. Express your own point of view.

2. Julia's reputation: what she thought of it herself; what worried Dolly about it.

  1. The facts which Dolly presented to Michael and his interpretation of them.

VII. Act out: a) the conversation between Julia and Tom;

b) the conversation between Michael and Dolly.
