Importing and Exporting: This 1s Your Pilot Speaking
An international taveller has to learn а new language. Long international flights provide а passenger а unique opportunity to improve his English. Pilots are encouraged to talk to passengers frequently over the public address system. Major air companies including Trans World Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines provide pilots with training to help them talk with passengers. The aim is to help pilots perfect their speech in speed and intonation.
Pilots are discouraged from using words such as "late" or "turbulence", let alone "thunderstorm". Instead captain should simply state the new departure time, call turbulence "bumpy air" and refer to а thunderstorm as a "ram shower".
Travellers like it when their pilots are тоге open and frank with them. When а flight is delayed some pilots bring printouts of weather forecast into the cabin to explain а delay. They want their passengers to see that the weather is а real problem and not
just an excuse.
The commitment to candor has its limitations. Omitting certain information - especially details pilots consider irrelevant - is encouraged. If а severe weather storm is 60 km. away, а pilot likely will not call attention to it. If, on the other hand, there is something that may harm the passengers, the pilot is likely to make them aware of the danger.
Such words as "terminal", "final destination", and "fog" are avoided. То а fearful flyer these words are associated with death. So, the prefered words are "mist", "haze", or "restricted visibility". The term "aborted takeoff" is also avoided. According to experts, the word "abort" has а negative effect. То pilots terms such as "turbulence" and "aborted takeoff' до not ring alarm, but the public perception of these terms is far different.
Still, many passengers prefer to hear the pilot say something rather than nothing at all. Even if the news is not good, honesty is better. Mystery fosters anxiety and suspicion. The leak of fuel is по good news at а11. But the passengers on а BA Concorde flying from London to New York appreciated the honesty of their captain who informed them that the Concorde began reeking of fuel. The travellers remained calm, although they could smell the fuel. The flight was diverted and the jet landed safely in Gander, Nfld. An emergency landing ended safely.
Entrepreneurs who are in import-export business spend а considerable amount of time in airports and in the air. They hear pilot speaking more often than other categories of passengers. For them the quality of services provided is of particular importance.

A self-service car rental scheme, which allоws users to pick up a car using a PIN (personal identificaion number) code has been started by Collect Car end the City of Rotterdam. Last summer saw the P [N cars available in dozens of locations in major Dutch cities. The so-called 'Greenwheels' system does away with the form-filling of car hire and the need to collect vehicles from the rectal office. It is hoped that the informality and flexibility of the scheme will encourage drivers to hire cars as they need them rather than keep a private vehicle.
