15. Comparing Prices.

Every day, when we go to the supermarket or somewhere else, we have to compare prices. It’s very important to compare prices for students because they don’t have high scholarships. So let’s talk about comparing prices, for example, in the supermarket. So here are some helpful hints:

  1. First of all, you need to write a shopping list.

  2. Then, you can consult your relatives, friends, who know the approximate level of prices.

  3. Then, you need to go to the shop. You can ask your friend/mother to help you.

In the shop:

  1. You need to consider the available goods.

  2. You need to think about the tastes of those who would consume this commodity.

  3. You need to try to evaluate the quality of the product. You can take into account, that usually the higher the price, the higher the quality.

  4. You need to obtain product information, for example, “Best before” data. You may try to compare this information.

  5. You need to take adverts and different gimmicks into account. Remember, that these ads often show only good sides of the products.

  6. You need to ask the shop assistant about discounts or bonuses for customers.

And of course, you can choose another shop/supermarket. After that, you can make a right decision of where to purchase goods.

16. Finding a Job.

So you want to find a job? First of all, you need to find out where to start looking for a job, which documents should be filled out, how to get ready for the interview.

Where can you find such information?

  1. Your class-mates, teachers, relatives, a school career adviser can help you. They can tell you about some work for students, the qualification needed etc.

  2. You need to talk to managers in different placed such as fast-food restaurants, supermarkets etc. on order to find if any jobs are available.

  3. You can go to an adult education center to attend part- or full-time courses.

  4. You can look for a suitable newspaper ad.

  5. You can visit a job agency which can help you to find a job.

This is the first step of job hunting.

Secondly, you need to show the employer why you are the right person for the job. So you need to fill out the application. There you can write the names of your friends who can tell the employer about your personal habits and skills. The application form is a guide for an employer, so you need to write neatly and provide complete and useful information. If an employer needs a resume, you’ll have to write it. This document must contain information about you and your education, personal skills etc.

Thirdly, you need to prepare for the interview. You need to be on time, dress neatly, be polite and listen to the employer. If everything goes right, you can discuss some details of your future job.

17. The rights of a customer and the responsibilities of a supplier. (Unit 5. Role Play 5.7)

Many people think that complaining about faulty goods or bad service is never easy. Most of them dislike making a fuss. However, when you are shopping, it is important to know your rights.

When you buy something from a shop, you are making a contract. But you want to make sure if this contract means that it's up to the shop to deal with your complaints if the goods are not satisfactory. The first thing that comes to your mind is that the goods must not be broken or damaged and must work properly. The second thing that you find important is that the goods must be as described - whether on the pack or by the salesman. It makes you understand the third principle: The goods should be fit for their purpose. This means the purpose for which most people buy those particular goods. If you wanted something for a special purpose, you must have said exactly what for.

You are quite sure that if the shop sells you faulty goods, it has broken its side of the bargain. And that is absolutely right. In this situation customer have the right to return the goods and have a complete refund. At that time if the good is broken and it was your fault than seller shouldn't return your money to you. That'll be his right. You always have an opportunity to negotiate a reasonable settlement with a supplier.

There are four golden rules of a wise buyer:

Examine the goods your buy at once. If they are faulty, tell the seller quickly.

Keep any receipts you are given. If you have to return something, the receipt will help to prove where and when you bought it.

Don't be afraid to complain. You are not asking a favour to have faulty goods put right. The law is on your side.

Be persistent. If your complaint is justified, it is somebody's responsibility to put things right.
