8. Discuss your favourite dishes with your partner. Speak about the way they are cooked.

  • Hello! How are you?

  • Hello! Fine, thanks.

  • How nice of you to drop in. I’m so glad to see you.

  • How are you getting along? I am hungry.

  • Let me help you to some salad.

  • Please do. It looks so inviting. That’s quite enough, thank you.

  • How do you find the salad?

  • Awfully nice. I have never tasted such a lovely salad; will you tell me how you make it?

  • I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it and it’s very nice of you to say so. It is quite easy to make. I’ll write down the ingredients and the directions for mixing.

  • Thank you very much.

  • It’s more a beverage than a food, but tea is the one thing I can’t live without. The first thing in the morning, my body is just screaming for a morning cup of tea. And to be honest, I’m actually dying for a cuppa right now as well! My brain just doesn’t work without tea. Tell me about the foods you can't live without.

  • I love Mexican food. Really hard to live without it. I guess I especially love the different Mexican salsas, which you can put on almost any dish to spice it up. Salsa is just chopped tomatoes and onions and some kind of chili pepper.

  • My mouth is watering just talking about it. One food I could definitely not live without is pizza. There is nothing like pizza ordered out and delivered to my house. I mean, I like just cheese pizza.

  • That’s it. In addition it’s good cold for breakfast the next morning. It’s good reheated for lunch or dinner again. It’s the perfect food.

  • When I lived with my mother I loved a kind of open sandwich. It’s just a piece of bread, or even a kind of crisp bread or cracker, with butter on it, and some fresh tomatoes or cucumbers or ham or shrimp. It’s the perfect breakfast food, and it’s really hard to find in the shops and snack bars.

  • I usually don’t eat much fast food, but I really love a steak. We call it Sirloin Steak with Garlic Butter, which is a usually thin slice of beef. And the beef is marinated in a sauce and cooked over a hot charcoal grill at the table. The sauce is what makes it so good. It’s kind of sesame oil, with onions and ginger and garlic. It’s indescribable. I don’t want to eat it every day, but once in a while… it’s just so good.

  • What tasty buns you have here! Are they from the baker’s?

  • No. I am the baking today. I rather like cooking.

  • Would you mind telling me how to make such buns?

  • Most willingly. All you need is a few cups of flour, some fat, a little yeast, four egg-yolks, a glass of milk and sugar. You knead the dough stiff, and then cut it up into tiny buns. When the dough has risen, you bake the buns in a hot oven for 20-25 minutes.

  • It’s rather quick work and not much trouble.

  • Served with tea, they are delicious. Help yourself to some more.

  • They’re simply wonderful with strawberry jam. Well, it's time for me to leave.

  • Have a good time!

  • You too!

9. Discuss the worst food in your life. Recall the situation, when you tasted the worst dish in your life.

  • Hello, Natalie! How are you doing?

  • Hello! Fine, thanks. How are you?

  • Rather nice! It’s so good to meet you today at this small restaurant!

  • Have you ordered something already?

  • Yes, I asked our waiter to bring our usual order.

  • Great! Every time I visit this restaurant I try to have their chicken breast.

  • Do you remember the day we were at the disco in our favourite club?

  • Yes of course. The disco wasn’t very excited but I remember how we were poisoned by the meat we had eaten!

  • I remembered it too! Our friend Olya invited us to go to that cafe and to try their specialty.

  • It was perfect, what do you think?

  • Yes, it was really first-class. It was an inviting-looking dish juicy. The meat was melting in the mouth...

  • And gave the pleasure to the eye and the tongue.

  • And do you remember the taste of bread?

  • Sure! It was so tender.

  • I have never tried such bread before.

  • But it was very surprisingly to realize that our poor stomachs were poisoned by this real thing.

  • I remember only one another time of such a wonderful food. It was our coffee at the cafe near our university.

  • I remember it! It was lovely coffee.

  • And the wide choice of their desserts made a lot of harm to our figures, didn’t it?

  • Yes of course. And I remember their delicate sandwiches.

  • Oh I think our course is ready. Bon appétit.

  • Bon appétit.
