The
official name of Great Britain is the United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a country in northwestern
Europe.
It
is situated on the British Isles. The country consists of four
political divisions -
England,
Scotland and Wales, which make the island of Great Britain, and
Northern Ireland, which occupies the northeastern part of the island
of Ireland.
Great
Britain has a population of about 58 mln. About nine-tenth of the
people live in cities and towns. There are four main nationalities:
Englishmen, Scotchmen, Irishmen and Welshmen. The official language
is English. The capital of the country is London. Other large
cities are Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool,
Cardiff.
The
United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The Queen is the head of
state, but a cabinet of senior politicians called ministers actually
governs the country. The Prime Minister is the head of the
government.
