Practical Training of Stomatological Students

  1. Stomatological faculty provides dental education in various fields of stomatology.

  2. Students are taught by means of lectures, practical classes, seminars and laboratory works.

  3. Besides theoretical knowledge students must get practical skills in this field.

  4. In the first and second years they work as dental nurses at hospital and learn to care for patients and sterilize dental instruments.

  5. In the third year dental students have practical training in different fields of stomatology: therapeutic stomatology, oral surgery, orthopedic dentistry and pediatric dentistry.

  6. During their practice students must learn to take dental history and get main skills necessary for a dentist in his daily work.

  7. At the end of the practical period every student presents a diary reflecting acquired skills and his practical achievements.

  8. Practical training in pediatric dentistry takes place in school dental rooms where students are taught to work with children.

The Northern State Medical University

1. A Medical Institute was opened in Arkhangelsk in 1932.

2. It trained specialists, in therapy, surgery, gynecology and some other fields of medicine.

3. In 1958 a Faculty of Stomatology was opened, and in 1977- a Faculty of Pediatrics.

4. In future 8 more faculties appeared: the Faculty of Social Work, the Faculty of Preventive Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing, the Faculty of Pharmacology.

5. Teaching is undertaken by means of lectures, seminars, laboratory work and tutorials.

6. Students have theoretical study and practical work at various clinics and hospitals where they work under the supervision of practicing doctors.

7. The teachers and students of the University carry on scientific and research work in different fields of science. 8. The University has cooperation programmes with educational institutions of Germany, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Dentistry

  1. Today dentistry is the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and their impact on the human body.

  2. People practicing in dentistry are known as dentists.

  3. They must have technical skills in various fields of dentistry.

  4. Periodontists specialize in treating the supporting structures of teeth and diseases that affect them.

  5. The supporting tissues include gums, alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament.

  6. Periodontal diseases are a result of bacterial infection of the gums and untreated they can lead to tooth and alveolar bone loss.

  7. Endodontics deals with tooth pulp.

  8. The most common procedure done by endodontists is root canal therapy.

  9. Prosthodontics is the field of reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry. Prosthodontists specialize in the restoration of oral function by creating complete dentures, crowns, bridges and various implants.

  10. Orthodontics deals with the study and treatment of malocclusions of teeth.

  11. Sugery deals with traumatic damages and diseases of the teeth, jaws and oral tissues.

  12. Geriatric dentistry provides dental care to older people.

  13. Pediatric dentistry is dentistry for children.
