My dream has come true. I am a student. I study at Kryvyi Rih Economic Institute of Kyiv National University of Business and Economics.

I must admit to be a student of the Institute is not so easy as you could imagine. At first you don’t seem to understand how hard it is. Later, in two or three months, you realize you must work hard to study well at the Institute. But before I start talking about my student's life let me introduce myself.

My name is Olga Petrenko. I am 17. I have left school this year. I was born in Kryvyi Rih, so I have been living in the town with my family since my childhood. My family is not large: my father, my mother, my younger brother and me. We think we are a friendly family. So we are happy to be living together and are getting on all right.

Last summer I passed all my entrance examinations successfully and now, as I have already mentioned, I am a first year student of Kryvyi Rih Economic Institute.

I live not far from the Institute. It takes me 20 minutes to get there by bus . My classes begin at half past eight. That is why I usually get up at seven o'clock. Then I air and tidy up my room, do my morning exercises, take a shower, dress and have a quick light breakfast. At eight o'clock I leave my house.

I attend lectures and seminars every day except Saturday and Sunday. I usually stay at the Institute till twenty past four. At this time the classes at the Institute are over. After classes I go to the library to prepare my homework. On my way to the library I often have a snack.

When I come home I have a rest. While resting I listen to music or look through some magazines. Then I start doing my home assignments. It takes me about three or four hours to cope with my homework properly. So I haven't much time for television and friends, because I have to work hard at all the subjects during my first year at the Institute. But sometimes I manage to see an interesting film.

I do well in most subjects. But it is not easy. Everything is new and unusual. For you to have an idea of our Institute I would like to tell some words about it.

Our Institute is one of the best higher educational establishments in Kryvyi Rih. First it started functioning in 1977. At present there are five faculties here such as "Finance and Credit", "Law and International Economics", "Planning Economics" and "Accounting Economics”, “Management and Cybernetics in Economy”. There is a day-time department at our Institute. We also have an extra-mural form of education. More than 2,800 students study at the Institute. At the extra-mural form of education workers and employees can get their education without leaving their jobs.

The course of study lasts for five years at all the departments. The students of our Institute study many subjects: Mathematics, Geography, Political Economy, Philosophy, Foreign languages and many other special subjects dealing with their future professions.

Kryvyi Rih Economic Institute is staffed with highly - qualified teachers. The Institute numbers more than 240 teachers. About a half of them is awarded the academic degrees.

Kryvyi Rih Economic Institute is housed in three buildings. There are many lecture-halls, classrooms, studies, laboratories provided with up-to-date equipment where the students carry out various experiments. The students have libraries, large reading-rooms and a gymnasium at their disposal.

The graduates of our Institute will become economists, lawyers, bookkeepers (accountants), managers, etc. and will go to work to various offices, enterprises, factories, plants, planning bodies, banks, joint ventures, etc.

Present-day Ukraine has a considerable potential to become one of the richest countries in the world. To develop its economy quickly Ukraine needs highly-qualified specialists. To be one of them is my aim. And I try to do my best.

1. Show your family photo to your group-mates and describe your relatives.

Give a touch of their characters.

2. Look at your group-mate’s family photo and ask questions.

3. What do you think must be the daily routine of a person to be advanced in life ?

  1. Expand on the phrase "Genius is 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration".

5. Give your piece of mind of the advantages and disadvantages of your college life as compared with your school years.
