32. Geographical, economic and cultural peculiarities of the regions of the usa: the Southwest, the West.

The Southwestern United States is a region defined in different ways by different sources. Broad definitions include nearly a quarter of the United States, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada,New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. Narrowly defined, the "core" Southwest is centered around the Four Corner states, with parts of the other states making up the beginnings and endings of the Southwest. The five main southwestern states; Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada are also all considered part of the Mountain West, as well as the southwest. The total population of these states is roughly 19 million people.

The American

Southwest contains more than its fair share of natural wonders:Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park are only three of the most famous natural attractions that draw people from all over the world. The region is home to a wonderful and vibrant mix of anglo, latino, hispanic, and American Indian traditions making it one of the more diverse and interesting corners America in both history, landscape and culture.

The Western United States traditionally refers to the region comprising the westernmost states of the United States . Because the United States expanded westward after its founding, the meaning of the West has evolved over time. The Mississippi River is often referenced as the easternmost possible boundary of The West.

The "West" had played an important part in American history; the Old West is embedded in America's folklore. In its most expansive definition, the western U.S. is the largest region, covering more than half the land area of the United States. It is also the most geographically diverse, incorporating geographic regions such as the Pacific Coast, the temperate rain forests of the Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, most of the tall-grass prairie eastward to Western Wisconsin,Illinois, the western Ozark plateau, the western portions of the southern forests, the Gulf Coast, and all of the desert areas located in the United States (the Mojave, Sonoran, Great Basin, and Chihuahua deserts). I

ncludes 13 states and is split into two smaller units, or divisions:  *The Mountain States: Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada *The Pacific States: Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska and Hawaii.

New York Tri-State Area centered around New York City, including 30 counties spread between New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Approximately one-fifteenth of all U.S. residents live in the Greater New York City area. This conurbation is the result of several central cities whose urban areas have merged together.

Another conurbation is the combination of the metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose and several minor urban centers, known as the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Greater Los Angeles Area consists of the merging of several distinct central cities and counties, including Los Angeles,Orange County, Riverside, and San Bernardino. This area is also often referred to simply as Southern California or colloquially as SoCal (a larger region which tends to include San Diego).

The traditionally separate metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. have shared suburbs and a continuous urbanization between the two central cities (Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area).
