Britney Spears Lands Film Role

Jan 11 2001 11:59 1ST

Los Angeles, (Routers) - Weeks after Britney Spears landed a reported $ 1 million book deal comes word that the sassy teen pop sensation will soon be making her first feature film.

After considering numerous movie offers, Spears 19 has accepted a leading role in a coming-of-age story to be co-produced by her music label, Jive Records, entertainment trade paper The Hollywood Reporter said on Wednesday.

The as-yet-untitled film, budgeted about $ 10 million, is scheduled to start shooting in March with a little-known director, Tamra Davis, at the helm, the Reporter said.

Spears' publicist, Jive Records and Filmco, the Los Angeles production company said to be co-financing the project, had no immediate comment.

Spears, who is expected to sing in the film, will play a straight-laced high school student who ends up on a cross-country trip with two childhood friends - one a cheer leader, the other a burnout.

Along the way, they meet a young would-be musician who persuades them to go to Los Angeles to compete in a musical contest.

Her venture onto the big screen comes about a month after the Random House imprint, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers, announced that it would publish a novel written by Spears and her mother, Lynne.

Rights to the story reportedly were acquired in a two-book deal worth more than $ 1 million. Spears' autobiography, "Heart to Heart", already has sold more than 150,000 copies.

Last week, Spears earned two Grammy nominations for her smash album, "Oops!... I Did It Again", which has sold more than 7.8 million copies, and for the hit title track off that release.
