Conclusion

Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835 as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the river Yarry (this happened 47 years later, after the first European settlement in Australia). Thanks to the gold rush in Victoria, the city quickly turned into a metropolis, and became in 1865 to the largest and most important city in Australia.
