No “Northern Fish-producers Union” (nfpu)

The Northern fish-Producers Union was established in December 1992. For the period of its existence the Union became one of the leading fishing association in Northern basin and the largest union of small and medium enterprises of fishing branch in Russia.

Nowadays the Northern Fish-Producers Union includes 70 enterprises. 50 companies are involved in catching and transportation of fish, 4 companies deals with fish processing. Business of other companies concerns with fish breeding and promotion of fish products.

The companies own 97 fishing vessels and 12 transport vessels. Work on modernization and renovation of the fleet is constantly conducted by the Union.The total amount of workers employed at the enterprises of the Northern fish-Producers is about 6000. The main areas of fishery include Russian economic zone as well as 200 miles zone of foreign states laying along the coastal line of the North-East and North-west Atlantic. From 1993 till 2009 the amount of catch increased in 5 times, and the amount of caught fish reached 179 thousand tons that made up 31% of the total fishery production among the enterprises in the Murmansk Region.

The main part of the fishing vessels is re-equipped, has sanitary certificates and delivers the products to the various European countries. About 80 000 tons of fish (mainly pelagic species) are delivered on home market.

The Northern fish-Producers Union participates in improving branch management structure, in carrying out social and other programmes of the region, supports scientific research and work of the branch and Institutes such as PINRO, Sev-PINRO, MMBI, etc. The unique scientific-educational and cultural complex “Murmansky Oceanarium” was built with the help and financial support of the NFPU.

My speciality is a technologist.

Murmansk is one of the biggest seaport in Russia. That’s why the town needs a lot of specialist for fishing industry.

The Murmansk State Technical University trains highly qualified technologist both for fishing industry and the fishing fleets.

I’ve decided to become a technologist as I’ve been always interested in chemistry and physics. The technologist of a fishing vessel is captain’s assistant in fish processing. That’s why works directly under the captain. Also technologists can work in cafes, restaurants and canteens.

In order to make fish products of high quality the technologist must know and perform his duties well. The duties of the technologist are as follows:

  • To know perfectly well different species and the procedure of the fish processing.

  • To exercise control over the technology of fish processing and proper storage of fish products.

  • To determine the quality of fish stored in holds and finished products.

  • To keep the ship’s fish processing plant in order and ready for immediate fish processing.

Also he is responsible for the proper use of raw materials as well as labels and empties.

Methods of fish processing used on ships are as follows: salting, freezing, chilling and fish

meal and cod-liver oil production.

As far as fish factories ashore are concerned they use some other methods, such as: drying (in various forms), smoking (“cold smoking” and “hot smoking”), marinading, production of preserves and ready-to-cook fish products.

All the crew members engaged in fish processing work under the technologist.

It is the responsibility of the chief fish master to provide proper running of the fish factory and supervise the work of 8 to 20 fish processing seamen. The number of the workers usually depends upon the type of a vessel. Besides, the chief fish master is responsible for proper seamen’s watch- keeping as well as for loading and unloading fish products.

To become good specialists the students of the technologist faculty should study many special subjects, such as: organic chemistry, industrial micro-biology, ichthyology and fish processing and many others.

Every technologist must know English well to understand instructions of foreign equipment and to get new information from foreign magazines by their speciality; also they must know English well as nowadays most of the Russian fishing ships operate in fishery zones of many foreign countries.

On board small ships the duties of the technologist are performed by the chief fish master or his assistant.
