Unit III Scientific progress and man. Electronics. Modal verbs and their equivalents.
В англійській мові, напевно, немає іншої лексико-граматичної категорії, яка викликала б більші труднощі в процесі перекладу, ніж категорія модальності. Не збіг засобів вираження модальності в англійській та українській мовах - це все може бути причиною помилкового або неточного розкриття модальності у перекладах.
Так, наприклад: Не must be satisfied. Він повинен бути задоволений. Тут двозначне формулювання, яке допускає два значення: 1) Його необхідно задовольнить; 2) Він, напевно, задоволений. Дієслово must, як і інші англійські модальні дієслова, може мати різні функції, і тільки контекст та обставини дозволяють їх розрізнити.
Модальні дієслова can, may must та їх еквіваленти (to) be to, (to) have to, ought to, should, would вживаються тільки у сполученні з інфінітивом іншого дієслова і виражають ставлення діючої особи до дм вираженої інфінітивом. Разом з інфінітивом вони утворюють складну форму присудка.
Допоміжні дієслова.
Дієслова to be, to have, to do, shall (should), will (would) називаються допоміжними (auxiliary verbs), тому що за їх допомогою утворюються різні складні форми дієслова. Вони відіграють важливу роль в відмінюванні дієслова, за їх допомогою утворюються різні дієслівні часи, за винятком Present and Past Indefinite. Допоміжні дієслова не мають самостійного значення і виражають тільки різні граматичні значення, являються показниками часу, особи, стану і т.д.
Сама дія виражається основними дієсловами, в сполученні з якими вони вживаються.
Допоміжні дієслова to be, to have, shall (should), will (would) мають в деяких випадках модальне значення, виражаючи необхідність, бажання здійснити дію, і тому ці дієслова називають еквівалентами модальних дієслів. Крім згаданих еквівалентів, існують інші еквіваленти: to be able (to), to be allowed (to), ought (to), to be obliged
Особливості модальних дієслів:
Модальні дієслова не мають форми інфінітива.
Після них не вживається частка "to".
Питальні та заперечні форми утворюють без допоміжного дієслова "do".
Не мають особового закінчення -s, не мають усіх форм часу, і тому вони ще називаються недостатніми (Defective Verbs).
Замість відсутніх у модальних дієслів форм часу вживаються еквіваленти.

Scientific progress and man
Scientific and engineering progress opens up wide prospects, before man. The more scientific knowledge man has, the more he is able to use the forces of nature to his advantage. Scientific and technical progress enables man to obtain newer and cheaper sources of energy, to manufacture new man-made materials and to launch artificial satellites into outer space. Let us take, for example, the prospects for accelerating communications.
Today with the latest means of transports man can overcome great distances. Rocket transport may solve the problem of far distances in the very nearest future. Quantum electronics will have to enable man to transmit comprehensive information over great distances. The possibility to watch what goes on in the world over TV changes people's way of thinking. People begin to understand that they are neighbours and have to build their relations on the basis of scientific and cultural cooperation. One should remember that it is the scientific cooperation which is to become the foundation of international relations.
