Prisons in the United States and the United Kingdom

Prisons in the United States are operated by the Federal government, as well as by each of the state governments. Incarceration is one of the main forms of punishment for the commission of felony offenses in the United States. In the United States, prisons are operated at various levels of security.

Many of the smaller county and city jails do not classify prisoners. While some of these small facilities operate as "close security" facilities, to prevent prisoner-on-prisoner violence and increase overall security, others may put many prisoners into the same cells without regard to the criminal histories of the prisoners. Other local jails are large, and have many different security levels.

In the UK prisons and their inmates are grouped into four categories - A, B, C and D - according to the level of threat posed by the prisoners, the level of supervision they require and their likelihood of attempting escape. A Category A Prison is a maximum security prison, highly secured, and used mainly for high risk offenders such as murderers, serious sex offenders and terrorists. A Category B Prison is for prisoners who don’t require maximum security, but for whom escape needs to be made very difficult, either because they would pose a threat to themselves or society, or because they have a high likelihood of attempting to escape. A Category C Prison is for prisoners who can’t be trusted in open conditions but who are unlikely to try to escape. A Category D Prison is for prisoners who are trusted enough to wander freely but must show up for daily roll calls.
