на формирование новой области исследований, являлись философские трактаты представителей доэкспериментальной психологии, попытки астрономов делать точные измерения, используя индивидуальные различия во времени реакции, развитие экспериментального метода в психологии, важные открытия в области биологии и статистики, развитие средств психологического тестирования.
Направления, в которых развивается современная дифференциальная психология, частично были предопределены открытиями в таких смежных с ней областях, как биология и статистика, а также последовательным развитием психологического тестирования. Кроме этого, на развитие направлений современной дифференциальной психологии повлияла антропология и социальная психология — области, имеющие с ней много точек соприкосновения. Отношение дифференциальной психологии к двум последним дисциплинам станет более очевидным после прочтения глав, в которых рассматриваются групповые различия и культурные влияния.
Такие первооткрыватели в области статистических методов, как Гальтон, Пирсон и Фишер, вооружили представителей дифференциальной психологии эффективными методиками анализа данных. Наиболее важными статистическими понятиями, используемыми в дифференциальной психологии, являются понятия статистического значения и корреляции. Психологическое тестирование, уходящее своими корнями к работам Гальтона, получило развитие в работах Кэттелла, Бине, Термена и армейских психологов первой мировой войны, создавших первоначальные шкалы для группового тестирования уровня интеллектуального развития. На более поздних стадиях стали развиваться тестирование специальных способностей, многофакторные системы и измерения неинтеллектуальных качеств. Главными тестовыми понятиями, которые должен знать студент, являются понятия нормы, надежности и валидности.
