1.1. Which part of the text does each statement refer to?
#1. The gang possessed advanced elaborated outfits and tools as well as highly skilled specialists.
#2. Following the robbery there were numerous cases of carrying off the possible robbers by illegal force in order to get a sum of money for release.
#3. The robbers showed their ingenuity and outwitted the bank security by fraudulent stratagem.
#4. The criminals were able to switch off the audible signalling system of the bank.
#5. The criminals managed to carry away an unprecedented sum of money from the Brazilian bank.
BANK ROBBERS TUNNEL THEIR WAY TO MILLIONS
1. Tunnel bank robbers in South America have broken world records of crime, snatching millions of dollars from banks and making their getaways through narrow passages beneath busy city streets. One of the biggest robberies was a $68 million job in Fortaleza, Brazil.
2. About 100 yards from Fortaleza’s Central Bank, a sign appeared in front of a building that described it as a landscaping store, selling natural and artificial grass as well as plants. This was a trick, apparently, to avoid suspicion when the robbers removed large quantities of earth from the premises.
3. The thieves dug a 260-foot tunnel from the house to the bank, putting in electric lights, air conditioning and wooden walls.
4. The robbers entered the bank when it was closed for the weekend and got away with about $68 million.
5. The robbers managed to avoid or disable the bank’s alarm systems. The robbery remained undiscovered until the bank opened for business the following Monday.
6. ‘They worked for several months’, police said. ‘They had sophisticated equipment and experts in math, engineering and excavation.’
7. Police found a pick-up truck at the rented house. They also discovered that the house was covered in white powder, which made it difficult to take fingerprints.
8. The massive amount of money still missing has led to kidnappings of alleged suspects for ransom. In October, one of the suspected robbers was kidnapped, then found dead after his family reportedly paid $890, 000 in ransom.
9. The police also suspect that some members of the gang might be connected to other tunnelling bank robberies in Uruguay and the Argentine cite of Cordoba.
10. According to Brazilian press reports, one potential suspect sought by authorities is Moises Teixeira da Silva, who was sentences to 25 years in prison for organizing bank robberies using tunnels.

Test 2
І.
1.1. Which part of the text does each statement refer to?
#1. The astronomers have launched a research for the purpose of observing and following asteroids.
#2. One object has been very near the Earth in this century.
#3. Astronomers have managed to observe and examine only about two thirds of the vault of heaven.
#4. Early animals were possibly wiped out by objects hitting the Earth.
#5. Scientists have not identified all the objects that may hit the Earth.
HOW TO AVOID ASTEROIDS COLLIDING WITH THE EARTH
1. The Earth has been struck many times in the past by large objects. A meteorite, estimated to be about 12 kilometres in diameter, collided with the earth in the region of the Yukatan Peninsula (now Mexico) 65 million years ago.
2. Many scientists and historians believe that the extinction of the dinosaurs and other animals was a result of this collision.
3. More recently, an asteroid the size of three football fields (300 metres wide) passed close to the Earth, just twice the distance to the Moon. The rock, 2001 YB5, was first seen in December 2000, leaving little time to change its direction if it had become a real danger.
4. Scientists agree that we should take actions to prevent the collision of an asteroid or comet with the Earth, as the impact of an asteroid larger than one kilometre in diameter hitting the Earth could cause global devastation.
5. It is worrying, too, that only about half of the large Near Earth Objects (NEOs) have been found. It is estimated that about 500 NEOs have not yet been discovered.
6. A further cause for concern is that 30 percent of the sky hasn’t been surveyed.
7. A research project has just been set up by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) to track asteroids on a collision course with the Earth.
8. Computer simulations will be used to work out the feasibility of changing the direction of asteroids, using methods proposed by engineers.
9. One such method involves giant mirrors floating in space which could melt the surface of an asteroid and change its course.
10. Another method is to use brute force, such as smashing a rocket into the asteroid to deflect it. The rocket would not physically push the asteroid away but would use the collision to make a hole in the rock, which would push the asteroid in a different direction.
