Questions

  1. How does deforestation influence the Earth’s atmosphere?

  2. What is photosynthesis?

  3. What damage do sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ozone inflict to leaves of crop plants and trees

Reducing Pollution

You can help to reduce global air pollution and climate change by driving a car that gets at least 35 miles a gallon, walking, cycling, and using mass transit when possible. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, make your home more energy efficient, and buy only energy efficient appliances. Recycle newspapers, aluminum, and other materials. Plant trees and avoid purchasing products such as Styrofoam that contain CFCs. Support much stricter clean air laws and enforcement of international treaties to reduce ozone depletion and slow global warming.

Earth is everybody's home and nobody likes living in a dirty home. Together, we can make the earth a cleaner, healthier and more pleasant place to live.

TASK 8. One of the most acute issues in ecology is conserving life-sustaining global environment. Make a 2 –minute presentation about the pollution of one of its elements (air, land and water) using the words and expressions from all the tasks given in this unit. Structure your presentation according to the following plan:

  1. Ecological connection of the element you have chosen with the other elements.

  2. Current tendencies in condition, changes and dangers of polluting this element..

  3. Possible consequences of polluting this element.

  4. Possible ways of preventing the consequence of polluting this element.

While preparing the presentation keep in mind the criteria of assessment your teacher and group-mates will be using to assess your performance.
