Тема 20. The problems of youth in Ukraine

Young people are so similar and so different. They want to go on their way and find it difficult to be responsible. They express their self-identity in clothes, hairstyle and slang. Some of them smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs.,believing that it's the route to independence. They conflict with the parents and teachers, considering that only equals in age can understand them. In fact parents are not so strict now then they used to be and most young people have a considerable amount of freedom. But they still need somebody to hear them out and open their heart to. Often parents are too busy with the hush of money and can't give their children enough of attention and understanding. That's why they easily come under the influence of other people or find idols. The young people go to disco clubs and are crazy about music. They are interested in studying English and can operate a computer.

They are talented, creative and dream of a highly-paid job. They aren't afraid to risk because they have nothing to lose. They are romantic and skeptical. They are sincere and rude, honest and impolite.

They are the future of our country.

Тема 21. Teenage life in great britain

About 20 % of British teenagers leave home between the ages of 16 and 20. Some of them are students. They get help from the government (grants) or their parents to study away from home. But they go back home during their holidays, so they have not really left.

Most of the 20 % leave home because they want to get work and experience of the world. However, accommodation is a big problem. Sometimes young people share flats. But most young people have to live in bedsitters, which are rooms you sleep and live in. These bedsitters have washing and cooking facilities. There are cases, when teenagers live in empty houses. This is called squatting. There are also hostels for the homeless. Apart from accommodation, the main problems are loneliness, getting a job and being able to do the washing, cooking, etc.

In Britain, although, it is natural for children to leave home. In fact, only 9 % of the people aged over 65 live with their children. Many older parents who cannot look after themselves have to live in old people's homes.

Two friends are talking about their student life.

Ann: Hi, George! I haven't seen you for ages! How are you these days?

George: Oh, hi, Ann! I'm so glad to see you. How are you?

Ann: Fine, thanks.

George: Well, as for me, I'm working hard on my exams these days. I don't leave my house in the evening, for I want to spend more time on the exams at the uni-versity and get better results, than last time.

Ann: I see. Yeah, exams play an important role in student's life. I understand your desire to get better results now, for they will help you in future. That's important, for sure.

George: Yes, thank you. What about you? What are you doing these days?

Ann: Me... I am studying for the finals at college. They are in May and I have so much to do. I'd love to spend more time outside with my friends. But that is impossible for me now.

George: Yes, you are right. It's better to sit at home and study for the exams now, than spend your time in the coffee bars and discos. There will be plenty of time for that later.

Ann: Exactly! This is what I say to myself when I feel tired or lazy to do some more reading that I need.

George: You know, good results may get us better jobs in future.

Ann: Let's hope for that.

George: Right you are. It was nice seeing you here.

Ann: Me, too. Have a nice day!

George: Thank you! See you soon!
