Ukraine is a sovereign state. It has its own territory, government, national emblem, state flag and anthem. Ukraine is one of the largest European countries. It is situated in the center of Europe. Its total area is 603,700 square kilometers and the population is about 47 million people. Ukraine borders on the Russian Federation, Byelorussia, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Georgia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Our country is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and it has very important ports, such as Odesa, Sevastopol, Mycholaiv, Kherson and Kerch. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. The official state language is Ukrainian. Russian, Romanian, Polish and Hungarian are also spoken.
The territory of our country has a variety of landscapes. We have high mountains, vast steppes, endless forests beautiful rivers and lakes. The largest lake in Ukraine is Swytyaz. The main Ukrainian river is the Dnieper which divides the country into Right-bank and Left-bank territories.
The climate of the country is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls everywhere except the south. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. Summer is quite hot and dry.
The Flora and fauna of our country are extremely rich. Almost all kinds of European animals and birds can be found on the territory of our land Ukraine has inexhaustible natural wealth. It possesses enormous tracts of woodland, fertile black soil and fine pastures.
Due to favorable climatic conditions Ukraine is traditionally an agricultural area. It
grows wheat, maize, buckwheat and other corn, red and green vegetables, all kinds of fruit and berries. Ukraine is one of the world’s main center of sugar production. It produces sugar both for her own needs and for export.
The country has many industrial raw materials. It has rich deposits of iron, metals, oil, different ores, marble, gas, clay and potential water power. It has developed a varied industry, concentrated in and around big cities, such as Kyiv, Zaporizhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kharkiv, Lviv and others. It produces planes and ships, buses, motorcars, computer and electronic equipment and agricultural machines, TV and radio set, chemicals and textiles and various consumer goods.
Ukraine has its own original culture and art. It has many professional theatres and philarmonic societies. Over the last years people of Ukraine display a keen interest in the Ukrainian history and artistic heritage.
Ukraine pursues the policy of peace. Now Ukraine establishes new relations with countries throughout the world. It sets contracts with them signing agreements and treaties.
