Текст A. Job search

Job search is a long process, which needs lots of time and effort. You can't start it without a resume. You present the most important information about yourself in it: your background, your work experience, skills and special knowledge. You should write your objective too, that is what position you are aiming at.

With your resume drawn you start direct research. You study business magazines and newspapers and look for the companies that regularly hire in your field. You can send your resume to these companies. Employment and recruitment agencies are aimed at assisting you in finding a job.

State employment agencies are funded by state labour departments. The most effective way to use their services is to visit the local office.

Only employment agencies and some recruitment agencies will actively market you to a large number of companies. The most part of recruitment agencies only present the credentials on the existing position.

It is useful to visit job fairs and career days, ask your family, relatives, friends, neighbours and acquaintances to help you in job search.

You can use web pages on Internet, such as www.jobs.ru or www.hro. ru and other special web sites.

Interview is an important part in your job search. It is important to make a good impression and to wear proper clothes. Make sure your shoes are clean, well polished and in good condition. Don't fiddle with your hair, your hands or your clothes, don't cross the arms. Sit up straight. Keep long hair under control, don't wear too much jewelry. Try to keep eye contact with the key person in the meeting. It is not proper to ask about the salary at the first interview or criticise your former boss or company. It is not recommended to discuss personal or financial problems with the representative of the company. It is important to assure the company representatives that you are the right person for the position.

If you are offered a position, you can negotiate the offer and ask about your salary. As you can see, the process of job search is rather difficult, but it can be a rewarding too if you get the position which you have been dreaming about.

Текст В. What is a women's dress code for interviewing?

Basically, with all the differences in dress codes at different organizations, it would be impossible to come up with 'the outfit' for all employers.  One rule of thumb would be to dress as if you worked there already but slightly better.   In this case, guys have it easier- a suit works everywhere (dress it up with a tie, dress it down by taking the tie off and opening a collar).

For women, the issues are more problematic.  Go for the more business-like attire.  Avoid flashy colors, bold prints or clanking jewelry; don't look fussy.

Pick something that you are comfortable in; no tugging or re-adjusting when you sit.  Try it out by sitting in different types of chairs, for example.  Carry an efficient folder or case for your resume and/or work samples; perhaps a small purse for the necessities?  Low heels (not those killer spikes).   Low-cut and tight shirts are for after-hours. (We have seen all types come in for interviews.)

Be neatly presented in any case.  Check for seam rips, runs in stockings and missing buttons.  Look great and your confidence will shine thru.  Pick your outfit ahead of time then forget about it; think about selling your skills, not your wardrobe.

Good luck.  And don't forget to smile!  That is the best fashion accessory - looking like you are happy to be there and proud to talk about the value YOU can bring to their company.

Упражнение 1. Прочитайте и переведите текст на русский язык со словарём.

Упражнение 2. Объясните на английском языке выделенные словосочетания.

Текст D. What is a resume?

Resumes are what people use to get jobs, right? Wrong!

A resume is a one or two page summary of your education, skills, accomplishments and experience. Your résumé’s purpose is to get your foot in the door. A resume does its job successfully if it does not exclude you from consideration.

To prepare a successful resume, you need to know how to review, summarize, and present your experiences and achievements on one page. Unless you have considerable experience, you don't need two pages. Outline your achievements briefly and concisely.

Your resume is your ticket to an interview where you can sell yourself!

How to prepare an effective resume?

Resume Essentials

Before you write, take time to do a self-assessment on paper. Outline your skills and abilities as well as your work experience and extracurricular activities. This will make it easier to prepare a thorough resume.

The Content of Your Resume

Name, address, telephone, e-mail address, web site address

All your contact information should go at the top of your resume.

Use a permanent address.

Use a permanent telephone number and include the area code. If you have an answering machine, record a neutral greeting.

Add your e-mail address. Many employers will find it useful. (Note: Choose an e-mail address that sounds professional.)

Include your web site address only if the web page reflects your professional ambitions.

Objective or Summary

An objective tells potential employers the sort of work you're hoping to do.

Education

New graduates without a lot of work experience should list their educational information first. Your most recent educational information is listed first.

Include your diploma, qualification, institution attended.

Add additional diploma or certifications if you have some.

Mention academic honors.

Work Experience

Briefly give the employer an overview of work that has taught you skills. Use action words to describe your job duties. Include your work experience in reverse chronological order—that is, put your last job first and work backward to your first, relevant job. Include:

Title of position,

Name of organization

Location of work (town, state)

Dates of employment

Describe your work responsibilities with emphasis on specific skills and achievements.

Other information

A staff member at your career services office can advise you on other information to add to your resume. You may want to add:

Key or special skills or competencies,

Participation in sports.

References

Ask people if they are willing to serve as references before you give their names to a potential employer.

Do not include your reference information on your resume. You may note at the bottom of your resume: "References furnished on request."

Resume Checkup

You've written your resume. It's time to have it reviewed and critiqued by a career counselor. You can also take the following steps to ensure quality:

Content:

Run a spell check on your computer before anyone sees your resume.

Get a friend to do a grammar review.

Ask another friend to proofread. The more people who see your resume, the more likely that misspelled words and awkward phrases will be seen (and corrected).

Design:

These tips will make your resume easier to read and/or scan into an employer's data base.

Use white or off-white paper.

Use 8-1/2- x 11-inch paper.

Print on one side of the paper.

Use nondecorative typefaces.

Choose one typeface and stick to it.

Avoid italics, script, and underlined words.

Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics, or shading.

Do not fold or staple your resume.

If you must mail your resume, put it in a large envelope.

Jeanne Horning was a stim girl with shoulder length auburn hair. (Ron Goulart)

She was tall and dark, with smooth black hair parted like wings on either side of an olive-skinned, narrow face that might have been Italian. (Monica Dickens)

Her hair was dark, and she had done it up from the back, which was unusual at that time. (C. P. Snow)

Her white hair was braided in two shining plaits and looped at the ends with enormous white ribbons. (Truman Capote)

Her sun-blanched black hair was drawn tightly backward and caught up by a red ribbon.

"Granny," Ellen stood in the doorway in a shrunken skirt, her dun-coloured hair untidily caught back with a vast hair grip. (Monica Dickens)

Her fair silky hair was tied back rather severely on top of her head with a black ribbon. (Phyllis Bentley)

Her hair net had slipped lopsided and loose strands straggled down her face. (Truman Capote)

He bent his head. In the light it was dark-haired, with flecks of grey in it. (Ray Bradbury)

His bushy black hair was faintly streaked with gray. (Erskine Caldwell)

4. YOU CAN CHANGE THE COLOUR OF YOUR HAIR.

You can change the colour of your hair by using a permanent hair dye, or by bleaching it.

A Rimmel Hair Colourant Shampoo colours the hair to the shade of your choice, and the colour will last through several washings.

"I sure do admire that pretty black hair of yours," Jenny said with an envious inflection of her voice... "Your pretty hair sure puts my old mousy brown hair to shame. I've tried everything I can think of and come across to make it look halfway better, but it's no use. It always ends up just like you see it now. I've spent all kinds of money trying rinses and tints and bleaches and everything else the drug-store will sell — and it still looks god-awful or worse. Take my word for it, Lawana. You ought to thank your lucky stars for having the hair you've got." (Erskine Caldwell)

He was very tanned and his hair was faded and streaked from the sun. (Ernest Hemingway)

5. I SHAMPOOED AND SET MY HAIR.

I've fixed up for a visit to the hairdresser — do you know they couldn't take me till four o'clock this afternoon, they're so busy suddenly. (Evelyn Waugh)

She was fresh from the beauty parlour. (Evelyn Wough)

My hair is so fine (or thin) that it won't hold the curls, especially in damp weather. If I have a tight permanent, it is kinky, because of my fine hair. Some people, who have coarse (or heavy) hair, can use a tight permanent, and it will hold its set.

The hairdresser quickly retouched a few stray hairs with a can of hair spray.

Her hair was done up in metal rollers.

Sylvia turned around: there was a row of hairpins spaced across her mouth; she extracted them one at a time all the while she talked. (Truman Capote)

She was very young, with black hair tortured into an intricate pile that must have taken hours to achieve.(Charlotte Armstrong)

Her pale red hair, lacquered to a high gloss, was piled up on her head in elaborate convolutions. (Phyllis Bentley)

Her hair, cut fashionably short, had survived sleep very well indeed.

6. HE TOOK A COMB AND RE-PARTED HIS HAIR.

Eric combed his hair, which was too long. He decided that he would get it cut very short before he went back to the States. (James Baldwin)

He had a broad shiny face, blue eyes that darted enthusiastically and a few strands of wetted-down black hair combed crossways over his scalp. (Ira Levin)

His hair was very dark, glossy and abundant; carefully carelessly arranged in heavy waves which spread over his large white forehead. Sideburns of course, and a beard of course. (Phyllis Bentley)

Hooper appeared; tie was a sallow youth with hair combed back, without parting, from his forehead. (Evelyn Waugh)

He ran a comb through his hair, adjusted his tie and motioned me to follow him. (Moss Hart)

The electricity crackled as his comb went through the thickness of his soft honey-colored hair.

He was standing in front of his mirror, brushing his hair. It was then I noticed that he was taking some care about it. His hair was going back quickly at the temples, more quickly than I had realized, since he managed to disguise it. (C. P. Snow)

His hair, of which he retained plenty, stood up over his shining forehead in a short grey ruff. (J. G. Cozzens)

He was balding at the back of his head, unevenly, so that he always seemed in need of a haircut. (Evan Hunter)
