II вариант

Задание 1

Перепишите следующие предложения. Определите по грамматическим признакам, какой частью речи являются слова, оформленные окончанием -s, и какую функцию это окончание выполняет, т. е. служит ли оно:

  1. показателем 3-го лица единственного числа глагола в Present Indefinite;

  2. признаком множественного числа имени существительного;

  3. показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного (см. образец выполнения 1).

Переведите предложения на русский язык.

  1. George Washington's army defeated the British troops at York town, Virginia.

  2. The government of the USA makes laws.

  3. The US has many natural resources, rich soil for agriculture and forests.

Задание 2

Перепишите следующие предложения и переведите их, обращая внимание на особенности перевода на русский язык определений, выраженных именем существительным (см. образец выполнения 2).

  1. The US produces food products.

  2. There are two main mountain systems in the West.

  3. Students have a week of spring vacation.

Задание 3

Перепишите следующие предложения, содержащие разные формы сравнения, и переведите их на русский язык.

  1. The United States is the fourth largest country in the world in size and population.

  2. The East is much wetter than the West.

  3. The warmer the weather the better I feel.

Задание 4

Перепишите и письменно переведите предложения на русский язык, обращая внимание на перевод неопределенных и отрицательных местоимений.

  1. Any child may get a certificate of secondary education.

  2. Christopher Columbus discovered some islands of the West Indies.

  3. No real portrait of him exists.

Задание 5

Перепишите следующие предложения, определите в них видо-временные формы глаголов и укажите их инфинитив; переведите предложения на русский язык (см. образец выполнения 3).

  1. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometres.

  2. Thousands of tourists visit Washington every day.

  3. The war went badly for the Americans.

Прочитайте и письменно переведите текст на русский язык.

New York

In 1626 two ships of the Dutch colonists arrived in the mouth of the Hudson River. They set up the settlement and named it New Amsterdam. In 1664 the colony was captured by the British fleet under Duke of York and renamed New York.

Now New York is the largest and the most important city of the country.

It is the biggest port in the world. Thousands of ships come to the port of New York each year. The city consists of five districts: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond.

Manhattan is the heart of New York. It is the business and financial centre. The Empire State Building, Central Park, Broadway and Chinatown are there.

It is crossed from north to south by avenues and from east to west by streets. You can see the newest plays and shows at the theatres on Broadway.

The Empire State Building is one of the best-loved skyscrapers. Today more than 16000 people work in the building and more than 2500000 people a year visit observatories.

New York is often called the cultural capital of the USA. There are more than 800 museums in New York. One of the best known is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the largest art museum. Its magnificent collection of European and American paintings contains works of great masters of art world.

People call New York City the “Big Apple”. Jazz musicians in the 1920s gave New York this name. When a musician says he is going to the Big Apple, its means he is the best.

New York is also a very cosmopolitan city. People from many countries came to live there. It is known as a “melting pot”, because people of different races and nationalities make up its population.

There are a lot of colleges and universities in New York. The State University of New York and Columbia University are the most important educational institutions.
