Conducted in the 10th Form
Date: 14. 01. 14
Тема: Science and technological progress. Computers and computerization.
Objectives:
• to extend students’ understanding of lexis on science and technological progress;
• to develop students’ speaking skills;
• to review 4 ways of talking about the future;
• to help students choose the most appropriate future tense.
Materials: a course book «Solutions 2–nd edition», audiovisual materials.
Procedure

Lead-In. (10 min.)
Warming-Up.
Keep your Student’s Book closed. Now let’s discuss the impact of computers on our everyday life. What benefits and downsides of computerization are there? Write down two separate lists: one with the benefits and the other one with the downsides. Discuss in pairs your lists.
1. Introduction (announcing the topic and Listing the objectives)
2. Group discussion about computers and computerization
The teacher asks the pupils to take apart the word computer and divide it into separate letters. Now the pupils have to name as many items connected with the theme computing and new technologies starting with letter «c», than, name words starting with letter «o» and so on…
The pupils give such words as:
“c” – computer, connection, clever;
“o” – optical drive, operation system, open;
“m” – memory, material, matrix;
“p” – piracy, processor, paste;
“u” – upload, ultimate, undo;
“t” – terabyte, tactical frequency, tendency;
“e” – encode, erase, error;
“r” – reboot, record, RAM;
II. Following Up. (30 min.)
Presenting vocabulary and vocabulary practice
1. The teacher writes down a list of words with their definition on the blackboard. Students have to write them down in their notebooks. While doing so, the teacher translates the words into Ukrainian, and makes sure everyone understands some terms, that the pupils haven’t come across.
2. Vocabulary exercise (Workbook, page 48, Ex.4) 4. Pupils, open your book on page 65. Insert the words given in the list into the sentences. Try to explain their meaning in English, or, if it is too complicated for you, in Ukrainian.
3. Discussion. The teacher asks pupils to name 3 different companies that produce computers or computer parts, 3 different ways of storing information, 3 different ways of displaying information and so on.
Possible answers:
Apple, ACER, Intel; Flash drive, CD, hard disk; screen, paper, projector;
4. Individual work. Pupils have to describe your own PC, laptop or cellphone. What are their characteristics and features? How often do you use them?
5. Listening comprehension.
1. Pre-listening stage.
T.: I am going to play the recording straight trough ones, and then play it again. For the first time get the general idea of the dialogue – what is it about? The second time, pay attention to all the unfamiliar words and write them down.
2. While-listening stage.
This stage includes explaining the unfamiliar words from the dialogue.
3. Post–listening stage.
Now pupils produce their own dialogues. Elicit the word-combinations connected with computers and new technologies from the dialogues and add them to their ones.
III. Rounding-Off. (5 min.)
