Relations and relationships – Student Book Part 1: family and relations

TASK 1. Study the vocabulary used to speak about family members, relatives and names.

Family

  • the Brown family, the Browns, a Brown

  • parents: a father, Dad/dad, Daddy/daddy; a mother, Mum/mum, Mummy/mummy

  • children = kids

  • siblings: a brother, a sister, an older/elder/senior brother, a younger/junior sister; the eldest brother/sister

  • ancestors = forefathers

  • grandparents: a grandfather = granddad = grandpa, a grandmother = granny, gran

  • great grandparents: a great grandfather, a great grandmother

  • descendants: grandchildren: a grandson, a granddaughter

  • great grandchildren: a great grandson, a great granddaughter

Relatives

  • a relation = a relative: a near/distant relative

  • an uncle, an aunt,

  • a nephew, a niece,

  • relatives-in-law: a father-in-law, a mother-in-law, a son/daughter-in-law, a sister/brother-in-law,

  • a first/second/third … cousin,

  • a step-mother/father, stepchild/stepson/ stepdaughter

  • a half-sister/brother

  • a guardian

  • a foster child

  • an adopted child

  • an orphan

  • a relative on one’s father’s/mother’s side

  • Names

  • a first/second/middle name,

  • a family name = a surname = a last name

  • a patronymic

  • a full/short name, e.g. My name is Edward, Ned for short.

  • to call somebody by his/her first name

  • a maiden name

  • a nickname

  • a pet name = an endearing name

  • a pseudonym = a pen name
