“Service of Motor Roads in Sumy Region”

Service of motor roads in Sumy region was created on August, 14, 2000, on the base of Resolution № 420 of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 28.02.2000. On June , 1, 2007, there were 7236,6 km of motor roads of general use of Sumy region on the balance of the Service, including: roads of state significance - 853,6 km, or 11,8% of total length; roads of local significance - 6382,7 km, or 88.2% of total length.

Today there are 6,6 thousand kilometers of roads with hard surface in the region, or 91.7% of their total length (in average in Ukraine 97%). There also are single facilities on the road network: 527 bridges with total length of 14580 running metres and 4109 water-pipes.

For the years of its existence the Service needs to show stable growth of capital investments to motor roads of the region. As compared with 2000, they increased more than by 5,3 times, from 23,3 million hryvnas to 128,2 million hryvnas in 2006. Besides, according to the lav "About state budget of Ukraine" and proper resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The Service carries out financing of works on the roads of communal property in the region since 2005, and this direction also shows stable annual growth.

“Past and present of the Sumy region's roads”

The Sumy region is situated in the north-west of Ukraine and borders on Russia, as well as the Kharkiv, Poltava, and Chernihiv Regions of Ukraine. The Sumy Region was founded in 1939. It includes 15 cities, 18 districts, 20 town type settlements, and 1499 villages. The regional center - Sumy - was founded in 1652.

In 1940 the network with paved area in Sumy region was only 700 km. Building of new roads continued together with the restoration of roads after the Great Patriotic War during 1946 - 1950.32 km of roads economy of Ukraine for five post-war years. Mostly it was paving and roads with roundwood. 173 km of paved roads were built from 1956 to 1960. For the next years the network of paved roads of national importance has expanded. During this period 754 km. roads were built in the region. The length of paved roads was already 8.5% of the total road network in the region in 1956. 528 km of paved roads were laid from 1966 to 1970 and their total length was already 16,3% of the total road network. During this period, construction of roads in areas that bound the district center with Sumy was completed.

Today the paved roads in the area are 6.6 km. or 91,7% of their total length. Also on the network roads are man-made structures.

Nowadays through the Konotop district the state highways submission Baturin ~ Sumy and Krolevec - Konotop - Romney - Piryatin are passed. Road Baturin - Sumy is located 28 km from Konotop and adjusted to the highway Kyiv-Moscow.
