There are some pictures on the wall. – На стене висит несколько картин.

There was nobody in the room. – В комнате никого не было.

There are many kinds of gadgets. - Существмного видов современных устройств.

Выбор формы глагола to be зависит от числа существительного, следующего сразу за оборотом:

There is a chair and two armchairs in the room.

There are two armchairs and a chair in the room.
