All things, for all people, everywhere

Harrods is probably the most famous department store in the UK. It's over 150 years old and it has 330 departments on seven floors. On special days, about 300,000 customers come and spend their time and money in Harrods.

More than 5,000 people from over fifty different countries work for the store. However, the staff are not just shop assistants. Harrods has its own hairdresser's, doctor's, bank, fire brigade, and much more. A huge team of people clean and look after the store. This includes checking and changing the 11,500 light bulbs on the outside of the building.

Harrods is famous for providing 'all things, for all people, everywhere'. Whatever you want, you can buy it at Harrods - from expensive jewellery and furniture, to paper and pens. Someone even bought a baby elephant called Gertie as a present for Ronald Reagan. However, many people come to Harrods just to look and not to buy and this can be a problem. Sometimes the doorman doesn't let people in because they are wearing the wrong kind of clothes!

Shop till you drop

On Wednesday of next week, shoppers in London's fashionable Bond Street will be able to buy something special. Wednesday sees the opening of Out of the Closet, a clothes shop with a difference. All of the items on sale are of the highest quality: beautiful silk shirts, Versace sweaters, crocodile skin shoes... But what makes these clothes so special is that they belonged to Elton John. He is selling his old clothes to make money for a charity that helps AIDS victims. But even when everything has been sold, his wardrobe will not be empty. Elton John is one of the growing number of 'shopaholics' in Britain. One year he spent £25 million, including £300,000 on flowers and £9 million on property.

It is estimated that 15 million people in the US suffer from the same problem as Elton John. The technical name for this disorder is 'oniomania' and nine out of ten sufferers are women.

Psychologists have known about the problem for a long time. But the opening of more and more shopping centres and the easy availability of credit cards has changed everything. It's often a good idea to try on one or two pairs. There are now more shopaholics than drink or drug addicts in the UK. Many have serious financial problems, but the condition also results in family break-ups, homelessness and suicide.

Scientists are trying to find out why some people enjoy shopping so much. One idea is that it is connected to problems during childhood. Many parents do not have much time to spend with their children. Instead of love and affection, they buy their children expensive presents, and the child associates shopping with security and pleasure.

Fortunately, there are cures for the condition. Many people feel better when they spend money, but psychotherapy can help shopaholics discover why they arc unhappy in the first place. For others, anti-depressant drugs may help. But the best cure is probably to take your credit cards out of your wallet and cut them up. Remember: one pair of scissors is enough.

Haggling

1 Haggling, or bargaining, is like learning a language. At first, you're slow and you make mistakes. After some practice, you get better and it starts to feel more natural. Before long you know what you're doing without thinking about it.

2 You usually bargain for household and kitchen equipment, like plates and pots; handicrafts like jewelry and leather goods; house rental; taxi fares on long runs. Anything you buy from a street-seller, domestic help and services, such as the maid, or plumber.

3 You don't usually bargain for cigarettes and alcohol; meals and drink in restaurants; bus fares; medical goods, price-controlled food such as flour, butter, sugar, oil, tea, and milk; goods with the prices marked.

4 Before you begin, make sure you know what something is worth; ask a friend for help. When you begin, don't show too much enthusiasm. Appear to lose interest. Say you saw the same item for less in another store, or say you don't have enough money. Then you can flatter the seller and his goods. You can make an offer and pull out your money, as if the seller has accepted it. If he doesn't, put your money away! But above all, don't back out when the seller agrees to your price.

5 When the haggling is over, you probably got a bargain if you feel exhausted and relieved. If you think it was very easy, and the shopkeeper is smiling, you probably paid too much.
