Eating and Drinking in Germany

The main meal of the day used to be the family lunch, but because most people work, they often eat 1_____ or have a snack. They then have an evening meal with their family at home. Some Germans have a second breakfast, which is a drink and a piece of cake or a roll around 11 a.m.

Coffee isn't just a drink; it's a meal in the late afternoon, usually 2_____.

Bar food German-style is a sausage served with mustard and a slice of bread or a roll, 3_____. At the beginning of lunch and dinner, you say Guten appetit just after the first dish has been served. It's common to share a table with someone you don't know. But you don't have to talk to the other people, except to say goodbye when you leave. You don't have to leave a tip, but it's quite usual 5_____. You usually give it directly to the waiter. In some bars, the waiter serves your drinks in glasses placed on saucers. Table manners in Nepal

Before eating in Nepal, you'll want to wash your hands, so take a handkerchief to dry them. You usually eat meals sitting cross-legged on a mat. Take off your shoes before you sit down. Never touch anyone with your feet and never step over food, plates, or a person. The plates are rinsed with water before they are used, and once you touch your food, only you can eat it.

Use only your right hand to eat. You can drink from a glass using your left hand. Mix a little of the rice with some of the meat and vegetables, and use your fingertips like a spoon, and your thumb, to push the food into your mouth. As you eat, your hosts will ask you if you need anything. You'll make them very pleased if you ask for more rice.

If your hosts want to give you more food, but you're full, hold your right hand over the plate. No one gets up until everyone has finished. Step outside to wash your hands. Someone may pour water on your hands while you wash. Nepalis will also rinse out their mouths after eating.

A BOWL OF SOUP

This is a wonderful new healthy restaurant. It’s called ‘A Bowl of Soup’ because there are LOTS of different soups on the menu - sweet and savoury. For example, there’s broccoli soup, fish soup, noodle soup and also orange soup - yes, orange soup, which is delicious, and of course very high in vitamin C, so it’s very good for you.

There are lots of different rolls to eat with the soup. These are all freshly cooked and taste wonderful. The thing I really like about ‘A Bowl of Soup’ is that you can ask for another bowl of soup if you are still hungry! Yes, it’s true, and you can have this second bowl free, too. It’s great value.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is very relaxed. While people eat, they sit and read a book or a paper, or enjoy talking to a friend. The prices are very good - not cheap but not expensive. The lunch menu is soup, rolls and healthy salads. Most people say they do not want to eat again for a long time after lunch at ‘A Bowl of Soup’!

In the evening there is a different menu, with lovely food such as grilled salmon, roasted red peppers, couscous, pasta, and fish and vegetable kebabs. The desserts are amazing - homemade strawberry ice cream, carrot cake and apple pies.

'GREASY SPOONS'

'GREASY SPOONS' very rarely appear in guidebooks, but they are an essential part of life in the UK, especially for people living in the bigger cities. These small restaurants are so common that they often go unnoticed, but if they were removed, the country would be on its knees. In London, the capital city of the greasy spoon, there are hundreds of them, fuelling the population with bacon, egg and sausage.

Greasy spoon cafes are so called because any cutlery that comes into contact with the food they offer is immediately coated with a sticky, greasy layer of lard. More calories can be found in a cup of tea in a good greasy spoon than in a whole meal at a normal restaurant.

Greasy spoons are generally found slightly away from the main streets of most towns, they usually have large glass windows, a plastic sign with the name of the cafe - usually containing the name of the owner, e.g. Mario's, Bob's Place, Rita's Cafe - and a huge menu offering a wide variety of delights. Inside they are generally clean and functional. You'll see old wooden seats, tables covered with cracked linoleum and plain walls. Each table has on it a bottle of brown sauce, tomato ketchup and vinegar, and pots of salt and pepper.

In a typical greasy spoon, you will find people from all walks of life. Poets, builders, hurrying businessmen, students lazing around with huge mugs of tea. Some read novels, some stare into space, and others catch up on the day's news. At weekends there will always be large groups of friends, recovering from a night on the town.

The meals here are dangerously unhealthy, and absolutely delicious. All kinds of fried food can be bought for incredibly low prices. The centrepiece is usually the traditional English breakfast. Although it's called a breakfast, you have to be really brave to eat it first thing in the morning, because it is huge. At least two pieces of becon, two sizzling sausages, two fried eggs, fried mushrooms, baked beans and bread soaked in hot oil and fried. The English breakfast is full of meat and fat. If you want something less filling, there's still a lot to choose from; particular specialities are bacon or fried egg sandwiches (or, of course, bacon and egg sandwiches). There is also often a range of vegetarian sausages and burgers.

Greasy spoons have some devoted followers. Typing 'greasy spoon' into an internet search engine will bring up hundreds of entries. With pictures, reviews, menus and stories, it's the next best thing to going to a greasy spoon cafe yourself. But of course, nothing can beat going to the real thing – especially on an empty stomach.
