Kharkiv State Teachers’ Training University is one of the oldest and most popular educational establishments in Ukraine. It is named after the famous Ukrainian educationalist Grigory Scovoroda. Let me first tell you a few words about its history. It was founded in September 1811. It was established on the initiative of Karazin, Kwitka-Osnovyanenko, Gulak-Artemovsky and others. For this period of time it has trained about 80 thousands of highly qualified teachers, a lot of them are Merited Teachers of Ukraine.

Rector is in charge of the University. 16 departments are headed by Deans. There are about 46 chairs, which carry out training of full-time students and students of extra-mural department. The course of studies lasts four or five years. An academic year is divided into three terms each ending in an examination session.

The university trains teachers in 37 specialities: Physics and Mathematics, the Ukrainian Language and Literature, Geography, Biology, History, Physical Education, Politology, Sociology, Drawing, Music and so on. It also trains teachers for nursery, boarding and primary school.

The curriculum consists of the subjects the students specialise in, social subjects and Physical Training. Professional training includes educational subjects: Psychology, History of Education and Pedagogics. All the students study foreign languages.

Students are to attend different lectures and seminars. Students’ practical work is given much attention to at our University. The have teaching practices at schools, during which they watch and analyse how teachers conduct lessons; they give lessons themselves in primary and secondary schools; they organize out-of-school activities of their pupils. In summer our students work t summer camps for children.

The students also pay attention to scientific work, sports and amateur art.
