Careers and employment

The most important unspoken rules of career success are:

  1. understand how you are seen

  2. ask for and give honest and direct feedback

  3. play by the rules until you are in a position to change them

  4. work with, not against, the style of people you deal with

  5. don’t be a victim of your career – take charge and make your own choices

To get ahead in your career you should be energetic and enthusiastic at all times, attend all meetings and find an experienced person to give you help and advice, study for extra qualifications in your free time.

There are some qualities and skills needed for a successful career in business. First, you need to be able to get on with people. Whatever job, you’re going to have colleagues and customers. You need to be able to get on with people at all levels. Second, you need to be adaptable. Businesses go through constant change, your role will change, as will the people you work with, even the place where you work sometimes. And finally, of course, you need a sense of humor to keep it all at proportion.

If you want to get a job you should get an excellent preparation. First of all find out about the job. You could ring up the Press Officer and get the latest releases or an annual report. The annual report will say where the company operates and the product it sells.

Of course you should show that you’ve taken an interest in the company and show enthusiasm for the job because, after all, that’s what they’re looking for in the candidate. They want somebody not only who’s qualified for the job but will want to do the job, and will be interested and enthusiastic about the job.

Secondly, you could go to the company a few days before the interview, talk to the receptionist, get a company newspaper.

A very good tip – find out what the dress code is. You need to fit and you need to make a good impression.

Finally, your CV. Make sure it easy to read, it’s well written, but its concise don’t ramble.

Of course, the employer may ask you question. As a rule, they ask what do you like most and what do you like least about your present job. They may what don’t you like about the company. Of course, there will be a question about your strengths and weaknesses.

One of the most important problems for all companies is choosing the right candidate for the job. Choosing the wrong candidate means loosing much money in the recruitment and training of each new graduate and paying for years to come. Few companies have escaped the following features: choosing people who can’t manage, who are unstable, lazy sick and incapable of learning or finking new information.

Some persons don’t come up to expectations never become high flyers, even study-performance. The intelligence level and abilities decline slowly, but more negative features such as an anxiety, low esteem, impulsiveness or a lack of emotional warmth. Skills can be improved and new once introduced. People can be groomed for the job, just a politicians are carefully repacked through dress, hair-style, speech by specialist. People can be send on training courses bur there is a much cost about it. It’s better to choose the right candidates then try to change the wrong ones. The main questions which interests all interview are: “Does the new candidate fit the company, will he be a good performer, will he be interested in the job.
