Wall-Wash

Wall Wash Techniques and Sample Analysis
At best, many Junior Officers see a wall-wash when standing by at the top of a tank and an analysis over the Chief Officer’s shoulder in the laboratory. During tank-cleaning, the Chief Officer is at his busiest and will have little time to pause and explain what he is doing
It is up to you to find time, to complete Wall Wash training and to ask the Captain or Chief Officer to explain the techniques with you during a quieter period aboard ship

Wall Wash Techniques and Sample Analysis
It is essential that the vessel always carries sufficient stock of equipment and materials for its expected trading pattern and that it is at all times clean and ready for use.

Wall Wash Techniques and Sample Analysis
The following slide is a suggested minimum stock for a ships wall wash kit.
Ships engaged in regular trades lifting large volumes of wall wash cargoes will need to adjust accordingly.
Note that items such as permanganate crystals and silver nitrate have a limited storage life.
Ensure that plastic gloves are supplied, not latex type dusted with powder that can ruin the permanganate test.

Wall Wash Procedure:
An outline of the basic techniques
The over-riding principle is cleanliness. Any contamination will affect the results of the analysis. This ranges from dirty equipment to poor technique and care is necessary to guarantee accurate and representative results
