TOPIC 7. “Job titles – are they of any importance? Perks and fringe benefits: meanings, examples”.

This theme is very vital nowadays. People don’t want to get only a job. Instead they want to get so called “job title.” And that’s why it’s very necessary for marketers and managers to catch this tendency and be on the top of the modern business.

Bosses who are cash-strapped but want decent typist without having to give them a pay rise would do well to call them, for example, ‘Digital Data Executives.’

World business surveys in most famous world magazines and papers say that office workers have become so ‘snobby’ about job titles. Now they would prefer more ‘professional’ sounding position to an increase in salary.

Sometimes the situation about job titles can be so absurd that mere filling clerks can be called as ‘Data Storage Specialists’, photocopying clerks as ‘Reprographics Engineers’, secretaries as ‘Executaries’ and post-room workers as ‘Office Logistics Co-ordinators’. 

A statistics says that 70 per cent of office workers questioned replied that they might give up bigger pay cheque for a more ‘motivational or profeccional’ job title to make their job role seem more dynamic and inspirational. It also found that 70 per cent of stuff believed the people they meet outside work instantly judged them by their job title.

I think that this situation is only a question of time. And in real the main thing is not a name of job title, but the equtity of the work which is done. But, if there are still people who need it and if this problem concerns somebody on the modern marketing, then let things go as they go. It’s common situation when demand create a supply.

Also job title can attract people as one of the motivational facts. Recruiting departmant can use this instrument as one of the keys in the process of finding future workers.

And sometimes so strange names of job titles are used to make the sound of any non-attracrive work more pleasant for reception. But at the same time the name becomes not very understandable in this case. But this is another question, which doesn’t worry to much people nowadays.
