State verbs and action verbs / Verbs not used in the continuous form

State verbs express states(состояние) or conditions (условие) which are relatively static. They include verbs of perception(чувственное восприятие), cognition (умственное восприятие), emotion (эмоции) and state of being. examples of state verbs

appear = кажется, видится как believe = верить belong = принадлежать consider =считать,рассматривать consist = состоять (из чего-то) contain = содержать cost = стоить doubt =сомневаться exist = существовать fit = подходить, хорошо сидеть hate = ненавидеть hear = слышать have =иметь know = знать like = любить, мн нравится love =любить кого-то, что-то matter = иметь значение, важность mean = означать, иметь в виду need = нуждаться owe = иметь долг, быть в долгу own = иметь, владеть prefer = предпочитать remember = помнить resemble = напоминать, быть похожим на что-то seem = казаться suppose = предполагать suspect = подозревать understand = понимать want = хотеть wish = желать

State verbs are not normally used in continuous forms:

I am needing a new phone. I need a new phone. = Мне нужен новый телефон Who is this bag belonging to? Who does this bag belong to? = Кому принадлежит эта сумка? They are seeming tired. They seem tired. = Кажется, они устали

Action verbs (глаголы действия)

Action (or dynamic) verbs express activities (физическую деятельность человека), processes (процессы), momentary actions (мгновенные действия) or physical conditions (физические условия). Еxamples of action verbs:

ache = болеть arrive = приезжать ask = спрашивать call =звать, звонить,заходить change = менять(ся) cook = готовить пищу dance = танцевать eat = есть, кушать fall = падать feel = чувствовать (в ином значении входит также в число глаголов состояния) go = идти grow = расти have = иметь (в ином значении входит также в число глаголов состояния) help = помогать hit = ударять hurt = "делать больно" itch = чесаться kick = пинать knock = ударять leave = покидать melt = таять read = читать say = говорить shrink = сжиматься, садиться (о ткани) sing = петь speak = говорить talk = разговаривать throw = бросать travel = путешествовать watch = наблюдать

They may be used in continuous forms:

Who was he dancing with? = С кем это она танцевала? Someone's knocking at the door. = Кто-то стучится в дверь I've been reading this book for weeks. = Я уже много недель читаю эту книгу

State verbs in the continuous form

Some state verbs may be used in the continuous form if they refer to a temporary action, or an action in progress at a certain moment:

I'm having second thoughts about moving abroad. = У меня появились мысли насчёт переезда за границу (= я сейчас их имею, возможно - временно)

Jones is appearing in Hamlet this evening. = Джонс сегодня играет Гамлета (= появится в этой роли на сцене сегодня, т.е. конкретно сегдня)

There are also state verbs which may be used in the continuous form, but with a different, active meaning: = Некоторые глаголы состояния при употреблени в в continuous-времени приобретают новый, активный смысл:

You (have) a car?

They (have) dinner at the moment.

She (be) silly again.

You (be) my best friend.

That soup (smell) good.

He (smell) the soup.

This milk (taste) sour.

I just (taste) the food.

You (look) awful!

He (look) out the window when I saw him.

I (see) my dentist this afternoon. (visiting)

What you (see)?

I (hear) well.

The judge (hear) the evidence later this week.

You (expect) visitors this evening?

I (expect) that you are tired

How you (feel)?

I (feel) that you are wrong.

This melon (weigh) 2 kg.

He (weigh) the melon.

Naturally, you can use the verbs with the active meaning in the simple form, too:

How often do you see your dentist? They usually have dinner at 6.

But you cannot use the verbs with the stative meaning in the continuous form:

The melon is weighing 2 kilos. The soup was smelling good.

The following joke employs the two different meanings of the verb smell:

"My dog has no nose."

"How does it smell?"

"Awful."
