Hothousing is also a phenomenon of the state system these days. Children used to start formal education at five, and now some start at four. Some argue that such children are deprived of their childhood. Dr

Ryde replies: “If you have a child that is gifted in ice-skating or singing, then no one is surprised if these kids get extra training at a young age. So why is it wrong to give children who have a passion for learning extra education when they are ready for it?”

HIGHER EDUCATION IN UK

At 18 British school-leavers with A-levels can apply for a degree course at a university. Most of these courses last for three years and students must pay all their own accommodation and living costs, and some of their tuition fees.

Since 1990 the government has offered students loans to help the situation. The loans are between £3000 and £5000 per year depending on whether students live with their parents or away from home. Students have to pay back their loans when they leave university, but not until their income reaches £10 000 per year. The interest rates are low and there is no deadline for repayment.

It is common these days for 18-year-old school-leavers to take a “gap year”. They don’t go to university immediately after their A-level, but go traveling for a year or do charity work abroad, often in exotic locations, such as Australia, India and South Africa.

THE USA

I

EDUCATION IN THE USA

Children in USA attend either public schools or state-certified private schools. About 1.7% of American parents prefer to educate their children at home.

48

School children are divided by age groups into grades. Basically, the American educational system comprises 12 grades of study.

In most public and private schools, education is divided into three levels: elementary school, middle school and high school.

Secondary education usually covers grades 6- 12 and is divided into middle and high school.

Middle school students are given more independence and they are allowed to choose some of their class subjects (electives). Therefore, students are encouraged to take much more responsibility for their education.

Generally, at the high school level, students take a certain minimum number of subjects, but may choose additional subjects ("electives") to fill the required hours of learning.

The following minimum courses are compulsory in nearly all U.S. high schools:

Science (biology, chemistry and physics)

Mathematics

English (including literature, composition, oral languages, etc.)

Social sciences (including various history, economics courses)

Physical education

Many states require a "health" course in which students learn about anatomy, nutrition, first aid, sexuality, drug awareness and birth control.

Common types of electives include:

Computers (word processing, programming, graphic

design)

Athletics

Publishing (journalism/student newspaper, literary magazine)

Performing Arts (choir, band, orchestra, drama, art, ceramics, photography, and dance)

Foreign languages (Spanish, French are common;)

Post-secondary education in the United States is known as college or university and commonly consists of four years of study at an institution of higher learning. There are 4,352 colleges, universities, and junior colleges in the country.

49

Having entered a college or a university, students start undergraduate study. In four years of study they achieve a bachelor's degree. Graduate study leads to a more advanced degree such as a master's degree. After additional years of study students may do some research work and write a dissertation to earn a doctoral degree.
