This is the first of his paintings in which a well-known moral is happily combined

with humour. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1826, when

only four-and-twenty, which is the earliest prescribed age, and had even at that

time a great reputation. He became a full member five years later. In 1835 he sent

"The Old Shepherd's Chief Mourner" is perhaps the most pathetic picture Landseerв
