ADJECTIVES. DEGREES OF COMPARISON.

Прилагательные делятся на качественные (qualitative) и относительные (relative). Качественные прилагательные имеют степени сравнения.

*В сравнительных конструкциях с than elder не употребляется.

My elder brother is 5 years older than me.

Jill is the eldest daughter. (Она раньше всех родилась.)

Jill is the oldest child. (Ей больше всего лет.)

ИЗМЕНЕНИЯ В ПРАВОПИСАНИИ ПРИЛАГАТЕЛЬНЫХ ПРИ ОБРАЗОВАНИИ СТЕПЕНЕЙ СРАВНЕНИЯ

1. Немая e опускается:

fine – finer – (the) finest

nice – nicer – (the) nicest

brave – braver – (the) bravest

2. После краткой ударной гласной согласная удваивается:

hot – hotter – (the) hottest

big – bigger – (the) biggest

sad – sadder – (the) saddest

BUT – cruel – crueller – (the) cruellest

crueler – (the) cruelest

3. После согласной гласная -y заменяется на –i:

funny – funnier – (the) funniest

happy – happier – (the) happiest

busy –busier – (the) busiest

noisy – noisier – (the) noisiest

ИЗМЕНЕНИЯ В ПРОИЗНОШЕНИИ

1. Непроизносимая g – произносится как [ g ]:

long – longer – (the) longest

strong – stronger – (the) strongest

2. Непроизносимая r – произносится как [ r ]:

clever – cleverer – (the) cleverest

clear – clearer – (the) clearest

При сравнении предметов (людей) используются следующие модели:

1. as… as (такой же… как) – если два предмета обладают одинаковой степенью качества:

He is as clever as his brother.

This street is as noisy as that one.

Mary is as tall as Jane.

2. not so… as (не такой… как) – если два предмета обладают неодинаковой степенью качества:

He is not so clever as his brother.

This street is not so noisy as that one.

Mary is not so tall as Jane.

3. the + comparative adjective + verb + the + comparative adjective + verb (чем… тем… ) – если два предмета меняются в одно и то же время:

The older I get, the wiser I become.

The less intelligent they are, the more difficult they will find the test.

4. comparative adjective + and + comparative adjective – если предмет меняется все время (обычно с Present Continuous):

She was getting more and more irritated.

5. the + comparative adjective + the + comparative adjective:

the bigger the better

the sooner the better

Отрицательное сравнение.

Если степень качества не возрастает, а снижается, следует использовать отрицательное сравнение, используя less (than) в сравнительной степени, а

the least (of) в превосходной:

The book was less interesting than I expected.

It was the least interesting book I had ever read.

This car is less expensive than that one.

This is the least expensive car I have ever seen.

Усиление сравнения.

Для усиления сравнения следует использовать far, much, a lot:

Nick is much cleverer than Bob.

Mr. Black is a lot richer than Mr. White.

This book is far more interesting than that one.

Порядок следования прилагательных в предложении.
