9. The Queen of the Field Mice (Королева полевых мышей)

"We cannot be far from the road of yellow brick, now (мы теперь не можем быть далеко от дороги из желтого кирпича)," remarked the Scarecrow, as he stood beside the girl (заметил Страшила, стоя рядом с девочкой), "for we have come nearly as far as the river carried us away (потому что мы прошли почти столько же: «почти так же далеко, насколько», насколько река унесла нас)."

The Tin Woodman was about to reply (Железный Дровосек уже собирался ответить) when he heard a low growl (когда он услышал глухое рычание), and turning his head (which worked beautifully on hinges) (и, повернув голову, которая прекрасно двигалась на шарнирах) he saw a strange beast come bounding over the grass toward them (он увидел странного зверя, который прыжками приближался к ним по траве). As it came nearer the Tin Woodman saw (когда она приблизилась, Железный Дровосек увидел) that running before the beast was a little gray field mouse (что перед этим зверем бежала маленькая серая полевая мышка), and although he had no heart he knew (и, хотя у него не было сердца, он знал) it was wrong for the Wildcat to try to kill such a pretty, harmless creature (что неправильно было со стороны Дикой Кошки пытаться убить такое милое, безобидное существо).

The field mouse, now that it was freed from its enemy, stopped short (полевая мышка, теперь освободившаяся от своего врага, резко остановилась); and coming slowly up to the Woodman it said, in a squeaky little voice (и, медленно подойдя к Дровосеку, сказала писклявым, тоненьким голосом; little — маленький, небольшой /о размере/; слабый): "Oh, thank you (о, благодарю вас)! Thank you ever so much for saving my life (огромное спасибо вам за то, что вы спасли мне жизнь)."

"Don't speak of it, I beg of you (не стоит об этом: «не говорите об этом», умоляю вас; to beg — просить, умолять)," replied the Woodman.

"I have no heart, you know (у меня нет сердца, знаете ли), so I am careful to help all those who may need a friend (и я стараюсь помогать всем тем, кто может нуждаться в друге; careful — заботливый, проявляющий заботу; старательный, внимательный), even if it happens to be only a mouse (даже если это будет всего лишь мышка; to happen — случаться, происходить; /случайно/ оказываться)."

"Only a mouse (всего лишь мышка)!" cried the little animal, indignantly (воскликнуло маленькое животное с негодованием).

"Why, I am a Queen (да ведь я Королева) — the Queen of all the Field Mice (Королева всех полевых мышей)!"

"Oh, indeed (о, в самом деле)," said the Woodman, making a bow (сказал Дровосек, кланяясь: «делая поклон»).

"Therefore you have done a great deed (поэтому вы свершили великий подвиг; deed — действие, деяние; великое дело, подвиг, геройский поступок), as well as a brave one, in saving my life (к тому же храбрый /подвиг/, спася мою жизнь)," added the Queen (добавила Королева).

At that moment several mice were seen running up as fast as their little legs could carry them (в этот момент /они увидели/, как несколько мышей бежали так быстро, как только их маленькие ноги могли нести их = со всех ног), and when they saw their Queen they exclaimed (и когда они увидели свою Королеву, они закричали; to exclaim — восклицать): "Oh, your Majesty, we thought you would be killed (ваше Величество, мы думали, что вас убьют: «вы будете убиты»; majesty — величественность, величие; величество /титул/)! How did you manage to escape the great Wildcat (как вам удалось сбежать от огромной Дикой Кошки; to manage — руководить, управлять; ухитриться, умудриться, суметь сделать /что-либо/; to escape — бежать, совершать побег; спастись)?" They all bowed so low to the little Queen (все они так низко поклонились маленькой Королеве) that they almost stood upon their heads (что /они/ почти что встали на /свои/ головы).
