Unit 1.

  1. What is branding?

  2. Do you know any facts from the history of brands? How did they appear?

  3. Is branding sometimes criticised?

  4. What is the most distinctive skill of professional marketers, according to Philip Kotler? Do you agree?

  5. Is it easy for new brands to appear? Who is a brand manager?

  6. Is it easy to choose a brand name? What factors should a producer take into account?

  7. Give examples of brand names that are problematic abroad.

  8. Why do some companies make luxury products abroad rather than at home? Give examples from the text (in the Course Book).

  9. Some people believe that luxury fashion products should always be made in Europe. What is your opinion?

Unit 2.

  1. What types of airlines do you know?

  2. Why do airlines have very high fixed costs?

  3. What forms of cooperation between airlines are there?

  4. What is a ‘time zone’? When did time zones appear and why did they become necessary?

  5. What was your worst/best experience when travelling by air?

  6. Why do people sometimes behave badly on planes?

  7. Do airlines make any attempts to respond to customer dissatisfaction?

  8. Why is it still important for businesspeople to travel regularly?

  9. What developments do you expect to see in future business travel?

Unit 3.

  1. What types of companies do you know? What company type was historically the first to appear?

  2. Explain the difference between the terms limited liability and unlimited liability.

  3. Speak about advantages and disadvantages of each company type (including co-operatives).

  4. How many kinds of partners can there be in a partnership?

  5. Speak about flexibility and its forms.

  6. How do you understand the term teleworking?

  7. What factors may show a person’s status in an organization?

  8. What do you know about SOL company? Why is it so unusual?

  9. Would you apply any of SOL’s ideas in your own company? Why/why not?

  10. What special problems do small companies have?

Unit 4.

  1. What changes have taken place in organizations recently? Why?

  2. Explain the meaning of the term BPR.

  3. In what way do changes in the outside world influence organizations?

  4. Speak about the changes that have taken place at Sainsbury’s, one of the largest supermarket groups in the UK. Have they been positive?

  5. What situations (involving different kinds of changes) do you find the most difficult to deal with? Why?

  6. Speak about the changes the US and UK department stores (Selfridges, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Wal-Mart, Target) have gone through.

  7. What in your view should the 21st century department store look like? What should it offer to customers?

  8. Do you consider introducing open-plan offices and hot-desking systems a good idea?

  9. What problems may arise when two companies merge or one acquires the other? Use the companies Cornerstone group and Metrot as examples.
