When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you see your father’s smile? May be you take after your mother? If you have your grandmother’s eyes, you think it because of DNA. If you are
wondering which part of the world your ancestors were from, a scientific test known as a DNA-test can show you. Genes passed down through generations and we inherit our looks and
much more. From one generation to the next, families pass down favorite food, traditions and stories.
In fact, your family’s past has many different stories.
Perhaps, you have heard them when your family gets together. Who were your parents’ grandparents? Where did they live, and what were they like? Unique stories like these make you and your family special.
If your family’s history is a mystery for you, there is a way to learn about it. It is called genealogy, and it’s the study of people you have relations with. You can learn about ancestors who lived and died long before you were born. You can begin asking questions about your ancestors. While you are talking with your family members, take notes, so that you can organize any information you get.
Many people begin their study at a library where they can look for family names in old newspapers. Public records are very good things to check out too. Some records show when the people immigrated to the country. You can also search the Internet.
After that, you can start putting your family names together. Draw your family tree and write your name at the top. Work down to your parents, your grandparents, your great grandparents. With every step you are discovering your family’s history.
