WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

William Shakespeare is the world’s greatest poet and playwright. Every Englishman knows more or less the works of his country’s famous poet. Words and phrases from Shakespeare’s writings have become part of the English language and are used by all educated people.

The playwright’s father, John Shakespeare, moved to Stratford-on-Avon about 1550 and became a dealer in corn, meat, wool and leather. He probably dealt in many other things that famers about John’s village produced. They say he was a good man of business though he could not write. His wife, the poet’s mother, Mary Arden, was the daughter of a rich farmer in then village of Wilmcote. He gave his daughter a house with some land and a good sum of money. It was a good dowry in that time. Robert Arden, Mary’s father could afford it for his daughter, whom he loved greatly

Most probably he was born on April, 1564. On the poet s early years we know almost next to nothing.

He studied at the Grammar School mainly Latin and Greek. William understood Latin and French well and knew the Bible thouroughly. It is clear that by nature he was a boy of remarkable power of observation and memory. He was educated more by people and the world of nature about him than by books and formal teaching. So we may say he was a self-educated man.

William lived in Stratford until he was about 21, when he went to London. There is a story that his first work in London was holding rich men’s horses at the theatre door. But nobody can say whether this story is true. He hardly made both ends meet

Later Shakespeare became an actor and a member of the big acting companies. Soon he began to write plays for that company and in a few years became a well-know author.

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. Among them are tragedies such as “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Macbeth”; comedies such as “The Marrywives of Windsor”, “All’s Well That Ends Well”.; Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, historical dramas such as “Henry IV”, “Richard III”. He is also the author of two poems and 154 sonnets.

Shakespeare spent his last years of life at Stratford. He died in1616 and was buried in the church of Stratford. There is a monument to him in Westminster Abbey in London.
