3. Oxford

The motto of the university is “The Lord is my Light”. The University of Oxford is located in the English city of Oxford, it is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and is regarded as one of the world’s leading academic institutions. It was founded in 1167 and grew rapidly because Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.

4. Cambridge

The University of Cambridge is the second world-known university. The motto of the university is “From this place, we gain enlightenment and precious knowledge”. The University of Cambridge is the second oldest university in England and the fourth oldest in Europe. The university was formed in 1209.

5. Oxford and Cambridge

Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) is one of the national icons of England. These are the oldest and prestigious universities in Britain..

In terms of teaching system, each Oxbridge college has its own staff, known as “Fellows”. The Fellows teach the college students either one-to-one or in very small groups (known as “tutorials” in Oxford and “supervisions” in Cambridge). This system of teaching is one of the ways in which Oxford and Cambridge differ from other universities. The normal length of the degree course is three years, after the students take the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Some courses may be one or two years longer.

There are a lot of societies at Oxbridge: debating clubs, drama societies, philosophy societies, language clubs, political clubs, cinema clubs and others. Sport is a very important part of Oxbridge life. The most famous competition between two universities is the Boat Race, a rowing race which takes place every year on the River Thames. Members of Trinity College, Cambridge, have seen 31 Nobel Prize winners through their doors. Of 54 British Prime Ministers, 40 studied at Oxbridge. Oxbridge has 35,000 students from the UK and all over the world. Oxbridge graduates or “Oxbridge-educated” often become powerful and successful members in British society.

6. London University

The University of London is a federal mega university made up of 31 affiliates: 19 separate university institutions, and 12 research institutes. As such, the University of London is the largest university in the UK by number of full-time students, with 135,090 campus-based students and over 45,000 in the University of London External System. The university was first established by a Royal Charter in 1836, which brought together in federation London University (now University College London) and King’s College (now King’s College London), to establish today’s federally-structured University of London.

7. London Business School

London Business School is an international business school and a constituent college of the University of London. It is considered one of the worlds most highly regarded business schools and its MBA program is frequently ranked among the global top five. In 2010 London Business School was ranked number one in the world for its MBA program by the Financial Times. In 2009 the school shared this ranking with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
